Monterrey started things off with a win in an important battle against Queretaro.
After a few missed opportunities early, the visiting squad got onto the scoresheet with a goal in the 26th minute by Humberto Suazo. Tom Marshall of ESPN FC broke down the play:
While Queretaro had a number of chances, they were still only able to go into the half down 1-0.
In the second half, the most notable event was the lights going out:
It took a while for the delay to end, but the teams were able to get back onto the pitch before too long. Queretaro continued to control possession but could not get anything going in the final third and ended up failing to score.
Tijuana had a solid showing in their match against U. de G. The best play came from Juan Arango, who fired a long shot to give his side the early lead:
Marshall was happy to see this performance:
The club appeared ready to hold on, but Fidel Martinez came through in the 77th minute to pull even. U. de G. was able to earn the draw.
While there were big matchups throughout the week, the battle between Santos and Atlas might have been the most important.
Atlas saw their four-match winning streak come to an end against Pachuca. The problem has been the lack of offense over the past few weeks, as they have failed to top one goal in the last three matches. They will likely need a lot more if they want to earn a necessary three points against Santos.
Toluca defeated Veracruz 2-1 thanks to goals from Jordan de Jesus Silva Diaz and Paulo Da Silva on either side of halftime.
Da Silva's winner in the 71st minute was especially noteworthy, as his well-placed header flew into the top corner and left goalkeeper Edgar Hernandez rooted to the ground.
Although there is a lot of time left in this season, a big enough lead can end any chance of a comeback.
