How Marqueston Huff Fits with Tennessee Titans

Chad MintonMay 10, 2014

The Titans had several intriguing quarterbacks to choose from to ensure getting a project going behind Jake Locker just in case he fails to deliver. They didn't pick his option up in 2015, so mixed signals are swirling around. Maybe they're rolling the dice to wait until the fifth round to get their quarterback.

Marqueston Huff ended up being the choice at 122nd overall in the fourth round. It creates an even bigger logjam than there already was at cornerback to replace Alterraun Verner.

Huff probably isn't the immediate replacement of Verner, but he does have starter potential at some point down the road.

At the onset, the more realistic expectation for Huff is becoming a key special teams contributor and a guy who can be counted on if injuries plague the secondary. The Titans are getting a solid tackler out of the secondary, which should help him make his presence known on special teams in his rookie season.

He is a very versatile player who can bounce between cornerback and safety. Speed is his main strong point. He had a 4.49 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine, per NFL.com. His overall NFL combine results were respectable.

He only managed six interceptions in four seasons at Wyoming. Effectiveness can't always be measured by interceptions, however.

The Titans are pretty set at cornerback. They have Jason McCourty as one starter and a healthy position battle between Coty Sensabaugh, Blidi Wreh-Wilson and Tommie Campbell looming in training camp.

It will take considerable time for Huff to find a starting role with this team. He'll have to make his impact through special teams, which isn't a bad thing. There just isn't a lot of room at cornerback on the depth chart for Tennessee, which makes this pick somewhat puzzling.

In fact, Huff might have a better chance at seeing the field sooner as a safety than he does at his more natural position of cornerback. There are some emerging questions for the team heading into next offseason with George Wilson entering the last year of his contract.

With that said, the Titans continue to concentrate on defensive depth with this pick. This is another pick that is focused more on two or three years down the road than it is on Week 1 of 2014. It's not a terrible draft strategy by any means, but it does require plenty of patience.
