The Sports Gods Are Awake: BCS Scenarios
In college football, there are certain things that are absolute. There are winners and there are losers. But this season, the sports gods are set on surprising the world once again with a possible long awaited showdown…or should I say showdowns. With the Top 4 teams looking more dangerous than ever, it’s only fitting that we talk about them with big games coming up this weekend. Here’s some BCS National Championship Scenarios to chew on leading up to this weekend.
LSU vs. USC
During the Trojans’ championship run, an SEC powerhouse emerged as a co-champion during the tenure. Not to mention that they got shafted out of the championship game by an Oklahoma team that lost a game that season. If this is the way the gods want it, no one will be disappointed. The Tigers have been chomping at the bit since the Boomer Sooner Screw Job. There is no one that couldn’t say that the Trojans would destroy the Tigers that year, but I can say that USC wouldn’t have won the national championship that year. If the gods are having a say in the championship game, don’t be surprised to see the age-old question answered in January: Who is the better conference, Pac 10 or SEC? If this is in the cards, expect LSU to live up to the hype.
USC vs. Oklahoma
A possible rematch of that infamous championship game could be in the cards. After decimating (not beating, decimating) their first two opponents, the Sooners aren’t showing signs that the off-season was pure hell for them. The Pac 10 has already proven that they can beat the Big 12 on the main stage, but the Big 12 needs some major credibility. The Cornhuskers get the first crack at earning that credibility when they host the Trojans this weekend. However, if Oklahoma does finish undefeated and win the Big XII Championship, expect them to throw their name in the hat in an effort to bring pride back to their program. The Trojans don’t have Reggie Bush or Matt Leinart anymore, and the Sooners will capitalize on the loss. It won’t be embarrassing, but it won’t be pretty.
LSU vs. Oklahoma
The Tigers were supposed to play the Trojans, but the Sooners got their way. The computer messed things up then, but it’s trying to fix that mistake…I think. If the BCS Title Game is to be SEC vs. Big XII, expect the Bayou Bengals to make good on their promise of getting even with the team that cost them an outright championship reign. Matt Flynn versus Sam Bradford sounds like a pretty good match up. There’s a very good showdown with Early Doucet and Malcolm Kelly as well. In the end, expect this game to go into overtime; because there is no way that anyone can call a bonefied victor out of this battle. For the sake of argument, though, I’ll say that the SEC rides the wave of success all the way to the National Title.
Florida vs. USC
It’s a longshot, but there are many who believe that the Gators got lucky against the Buckeyes. Let’s be clear on one simple thing: The Gators beat Ted Ginn, Jr. and Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith. Chad Henne and Mike Hart couldn’t do it. So quit whining about it. Things are being shaped up to the point that the Pac 10 and the SEC are on a collision course to New Orleans. Mobile quarterback Tim Tebow vs. John David Booty, who is crawling out of the shadow of Leinart, sounds like a good battle. Both defenses are young and slightly inexperienced, but they both are hungry. Depending on this weekend, with the Gators entertaining the Vols and the Trojans battling the Huskers, this longshot could become a huge possibility. Last season, the Trojans had the BCS berth locked up…until UCLA changed their plans, and gave Florida the ticket to Tempe. This year, the only ones who can blame them for not making it are…well, themselves.
Oklahoma vs. Florida
No surprise that the Top 2 teams in the Big XII and SEC are in the Top 10. Florida and LSU are on a collision course for a battle in the dome for the SEC title, while Texas and Oklahoma are just on a collision course all together. If indeed USC fails to finish undefeated, expect the Big XII and SEC to capitalize on their mistake. One way or the other, someone from either the SEC or Big XII will play in the title game. But don’t get it wrong, the Big East and Big Ten are just as dangerous. Wisconsin and Ohio State are holding strong in the bottom half of the top 10, while West Virginia is holding steady at No. 5. If the Gators and Sooners meet up, it will truly be a meeting of the minds. Bob Stoops’ style of smashmouth juggernaut football versus Urban Meyer’s trigger happy, run ‘n’ gun shotgun offense. Everyone always wondered what would happen if Stoops and Meyer locked up. This could happen if the Gators can survive LSU, Tennessee, and Florida State. As for Oklahoma, beat Nebraska, Colorado, and Texas, and you’re in.
LSU vs. Florida
Arguably the biggest longshot is an all-SEC National Championship. Though the computers will tweak it so that the Tigers and the Gators never make it to the dance, Les Miles and Urban Meyer may have something to say about it. In the event that this does happen, LSU does have what it takes to stop Florida from making history once again. To make this short and sweet, this is more along the lines of an SEC championship game than a BCS game. But if it does happen, Florida will beat them and seal their fate in the history books.
Don’t worry knuckleheads. I’ll be back next week with another scenario…with the Big Ten, Big East, and ACC included. Have a weekend. See ya Saturday.
