Maidana vs. Mayweather: Complete Analysis from Around the Web

Brian MaziqueMay 3, 2014

Just because a turtle moves faster than you thought it could, doesn't make it fast.

On Saturday night, Marcos Rene Maidana gave Floyd "Money" Mayweather a much tougher bout than most expected, but Maidana didn't win the fight.

Officially, the judges scored the bout a majority decision in favor of Mayweather.

Judge Michael Pernick inexplicably scored it a 114-114 draw. Burt Clements had it 117-111 and Dave Moretti scored it 116-112 in favor of Mayweather, per BoxRec.com.

I scored the bout 117-111 for Mayweather as well.

The pro-Maidana crowd booed the decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was primarily the effects of pure fandom, but it was also about expectations and unprecedented success.

Bleacher Report's Kevin McRae said:

Check out this tweet from Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix:

Most have never seen a fighter seemingly get to Mayweather, or make the pound-for-pound king look human.

The 221 punches landed seems really significant. But the following numbers put it all into perspective.

Though Maidana landed the most shots anyone has against Money, the pound-for-pound champ still hit his opponent more and at a higher percentage.

While no one can dispute the fact that the fight was competitive, almost everyone who is considered an expert in the sport had Mayweather winning.

Take a look at these accounts:

With all due respect to the Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson, fight fans like him—who aren't considered experts—are about the only ones you can find who thought Maidana won on Saturday night.

Almost immediately after the bout, talk of a rematch began. Oscar De La Hoya got in on the act on Twitter.

Via Boxing News ED, Mayweather seemed receptive to the idea of a second bout with Maidana.

Quite honestly, Mayweather dominated the second half of the fight. He made the proper adjustments and did his best work after the fifth round.

A rematch would likely result in a more decisive victory for Money. FightNights.com sees it the same way.

At any rate, if the public interest is high enough, there's a good chance we could see a rematch in September.

Previously it was believed that Amir Khan—who totally dismantled Luis Collazo on the undercard—would get the next shot at Mayweather.

However, because of Ramadan in September, Khan has made it clear he will not fight in the Muslim month of fasting.

Even in defeat, Maidana earned the respect of boxing fans all over the world. That's the only thing he won on Saturday night.
