Kentucky Derby Results 2014: Winner, Winning Time and Purse Payout
California Chrome was the gold standard at the 2014 Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
Coming into the race, the colt was the odds-on favorite, and he more than lived up to the hype with a breathless 1 3/4-length victory over Commanding Curve:
His final time was two minutes and 3.66 seconds, per John Coon of the Associated Press:
California Chrome and jockey Victor Espinoza ran a great race. After a great start, they had been hanging around the lead for a while. It wasn't until the final turn that they distanced themselves from the pack.
What the finish lacked in drama, it more than made up for with sheer astonishment at and appreciation of California Chrome's performance. Espinoza had ample time to raise a fist in celebration at the finish line.
Some wondered if starting from the No. 5 position might cause a little trouble for the colt. However, Espinoza made sure not to get caught on the rail. He always kept a window with which to make his move later in the race.
With California Chrome's win, a total of 13 horses have taken the Kentucky Derby from the No. 5 position, which is the most of any position all time, per ESPN Stats and Info:

After the race, California Chrome trainer Art Sherman heaped plenty of praise upon Espinoza, per the Associated Press, via ESPN.com.
"I thought he rode him perfect," Sherman said. "I never gave him any instructions. I just said, 'You know this horse, go for it.'"
This is the first Derby win for Sherman, who at 77 years old becomes the oldest trainer ever to have a Derby winner, per Jonathan Lintner of The Courier-Journal:
He called the victory the "biggest thrill I ever had in my life," per the Kentucky Derby:
Let the Triple Crown talk begin in earnest.
As with every Kentucky Derby winner, the discussion will immediately focus on California Chrome's chances of supplanting Affirmed as the most recent horse to earn the honor.
He has two weeks with which to recover from the Run for the Roses and get ready for the Preakness on May 17. That doesn't leave Espinoza and Sherman a lot of time to revel in their success.
Given how well California Chrome ran, he'll certainly be a favorite for the Preakness, and beyond that, who knows?
You can't really debate Triple Crown credentials until two-thirds of the task is done.
For now, though, the horse racing world is bowing down to California Chrome.
