Manchester City vs. Wigan Athletic: Live Player Ratings for Both Teams

Karl MatchettMar 9, 2014

The FA Cup has produced another massive upset, with Championship side and reigning holders Wigan Athletic knocking out Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Jordi Gomez scored a penalty in the first half before James Perch doubled the lead just after the break. Samir Nasri scored for City, but they couldn't find a way through for the equaliser and exit at the quarterfinal stage.

Quick first half analysis:

City are too slow in the build-up, with not enough movement to get in behind the defence other than isolated sprints from Jesus Navas, and not a single shot on target in the first 45 minutes.

Toure and Garcia have plenty of time on the ball in the middle, but Wigan's back three and central midfielders protecting them are working very hard once the ball enters the final third. Negredo and Aguero have had little service and have been restricted to shots from range, easily blocked.

Wigan's quick counter-attack has troubled City at times, though Costel Pantilimon has similarly not been worked too much.

City need to up the tempo to trouble Wigan and Scott Carson, but Wigan's work-rate has been immense. It will be interesting to see if they can keep that up in the second half.

Quick second half analysis:

A goal within 100 seconds of the restart didn't particularly indicate that City had raised their game after half-time, and indeed it wasn't until they scored their opening goal that they started to look like the Premier League side.

Despite the late flurry of chances and pressure, Wigan were never really unduly threatened by their rivals, with Scott Carson not making his first save of the game until the 65th minute.

Great defensive awareness and organisation, with a very hard-working midfield, was they key to Wigan's victory on the day. City will rue the poor performances of the likes of Yaya Toure in midfield, failing to raise the tempo enough for his side, and Demichelis with his errors at the back.
