Underrated 2015 College Football Recruits Who Will Rise in Rankings This Summer

Edwin WeathersbyFeb 11, 2014

There's going to be a lot of fluidity to the rankings of the recruits in the class of 2015 throughout the spring. However, several prospects can already be called "underrated".

Although the spring is the offseason, there are still several camps, combines and 7-on-7 events to help a recruit rise up the board. Looking at 247Sports' composite board, a couple players appear to be great candidates to climb up the ladder between now and the fall.

Note: All rankings are based on 247Sports' composite board.

Player evaluations are based on review of tape at Scout.comRivals and 247Sports.

Ryan Newsome, WR

1 of 7

Current ranking: 322nd

At 5'7.5" and 163 pounds, Ryan Newsome doesn't look like much on the hoof. However, the Texas native is a 4-star receiver prospect who is as sudden and explosive as anyone in the country.

Newsome will draw a lot of comparisons to St. Louis Rams receiver Tavon Austin due to his speed, quickness and size. He should dazzle observers during the spring at various camps and passing tournaments, which should help him surge up the rankings.

Baylor and Texas are standing out right now, per 247Sports.

Ben Humphreys, ATH

2 of 7

Current ranking: 316th

Hailing from California powerhouse Mater Dei High School, 4-star athlete Ben Humphreys is one of the better pure football players in this class.

He may not be a blazer, but the 6'3", 195-pounder has good instincts and strong hands. Humphreys has good strength, plus he possesses a knack for being in the right place at the right time on the field.

With an ability to play receiver, safety and outside linebacker, he's better than his current ranking suggests. California and Washington are two schools to watch, says 247Sports.

A joint report on Rivals.com (subscription required) in November by Adam Gorney and Rob Cassidy said that "Humphreys has good size, he's athletic and has a really nice feel for the game."

Christian Bell, DE/OLB

3 of 7

Current ranking: 227th

Christian Bell is a 4-star defensive end from Hoover High School in Alabama. At 6'4" and 215 pounds, he's a tad light in the pants to play in the defensive trenches, but Bell can rush the passer.

He displays good first-step quickness to attack offensive tackles at the snap, plus he has impressive range and athleticism. After a couple of combines and camps full of beating his blockers during pass-rushing drills, Bell should rise in the rankings.

Don't be surprised if Bell pulls the trigger with Alabama soon.

Eli Brown, LB

4 of 7

Current ranking: 145th

Formerly committed to Vanderbilt, 4-star linebacker Eli Brown is back on the market.

The Kentucky native has a chance to creep up the board this summer due to his quickness, range, athleticism and speed for the linebacker position.

Although Brown is only 6'2" and 195 pounds, he's stronger than many think. He displays the ability to sift through traffic across the field to chase running backs, plus he flashes solid movement skills in coverage.

Frank Buncom IV, CB

5 of 7

Current ranking: 135th

Big cornerbacks are always in high demand, and 4-star prospect Frank Buncom IV is already 6'1" and 190 pounds. He hails from San Diego, and while Buncom stays classy off the field, he annoys receivers on it.

Tall cornerbacks usually are stiff-hipped, but Buncom appears to have loose hips and moves well for his size. He has enough speed to carry receivers all over the field in various coverages, plus he displays adequate ball skills.

Look for him to use his size and cover skills to show people he deserves to be ranked higher during 1-on-1 drills in the spring and summer. Stanford leads several other programs, per 247Sports.

Kendrell McFadden, S

6 of 7

Current ranking: 114th

A big 4-star safety who can roam and run, Kendrell McFadden is already committed to West Virginia. The Florida native has great vision from the third level, plus he can attack passing lanes with speed.

If McFadden, who is 6'3" and 187 pounds, can get stronger and improve his skills in man coverage this spring, he has a chance to get into the Top 100.

Jay Bradford, RB

7 of 7

Current ranking: 106th

Jay Bradford is a 4-star running back from Texas who is committed to Texas A&M. At 5'10.5" and 190 pounds, Bradford does a good job of attacking seams with strength and force.

If a defense fails to force him to turn his shoulders behind the line of scrimmage, the future Aggie has enough quickness through holes and speed to do major damage.

Bradford needs to prove he can catch the football out of the backfield, because if he shows he can do that this spring and summer, he'll make his way into the No. 1 running back discussion.
