Lloyd Carr Rolls Snake Eyes: CFB Top 25 Review

Ron JohnsonSep 2, 2007

In Vegas, it’s all about rolling the dice and taking a chance.

Sometimes you get lucky enough to win the big ones. Sometime you roll the numbers of death.

On Saturday, Lloyd Carr and the Michigan Wolverines crapped out in the worst way. Here’s a rundown of the Top 25 action from college football's first weekend.

#1 USC

The Trojans opened up their season with a bang.

John David Booty went 22 of 34 for 206 yards, three TDs, and two INTs as the country's top team vandalized the Idaho Vandals 38-10. Stafon Johnson added two TDs on the ground as the Trojans geared up for their September 15th showdown with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

#2 LSU

They weren't perfect, but the Tigers showed that they could win without JaMarcus Russell.

Matt Flynn went 12 of 19 for 128 yards and two TDs in his debut as the Tigers blanked the Mississippi State Bulldogs 45-0. They're slated for a shootout with the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday.

#3 West Virginia

The Mountaineers had a holiday on Saturday.

Patrick White went 13 of 22 for 226 yards with two passing TDs and two rushing TDs as West Virginia spanked Western Michigan 62-24. It was the highest point total for the Mountaineers since an 80-7 win over Rutgers. Up next is a date with the Thundering Herd of Marshall.

#4 Texas

The Longhorns may not have won big, but Colt McCoy will tell you a win is a win.

McCoy threw two first-quarter touchdown passes as the Horns squeaked by the Arkansas State Indians 21-13. An onside kick penalty saved the game for Texas. The Horns face a dangerous TCU squad this weekend.

#5 Michigan

The Michigan Wolverines received a gift they didn’t want on Saturday: a loss in Ann Arbor on opening day.

Ignoring the odds, the Appalachian State Mountaineers handed the Wolverines a 34-32 loss before a stunned crowd at the Big House. The Wolverines won’t have much time to mourn, as Pac-10 powerhouse Oregon is coming to town.

#6 Florida

New defense. New quarterback. New season. Same results.

Tim Tebow had a career day—300 passing yards, three passing TDs, one rushing score—as the Florida Gators opened their national title defense with a 49-3 win over Western Kentucky. The Gators have one more prep game before the Tennessee Volunteers come to town, as Florida entertains Troy next weekend.

#7 Wisconsin

The Badgers were smiling even before they heard about the upset in Ann Arbor.

Tyler Donovan threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Wisconsin opened its season with a 42-21 victory over the Washington State Cougars. The Badgers roll the dice in Sin City this week when they match up with UNLV.

#8 Oklahoma

New QB Sam Bradford threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns, while DeMarco Murray became the first Sooner to ever score five touchdowns in his debut.

The result: a 79-10 thrashing of the North Texas Mean Green.

The romp should be good preparation for the Sooners' showdown next weekend with the Miami Hurricanes.

#9 Virginia Tech

No team is more charged for the season than the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Emotions were running high on a campus still coping with tragedy, and the Hokies didn’t disappoint. The offense sputtered throughout the game, but the defense gave the faculty, staff, and student body of Virginia Tech University a 17-7 win over East Carolina.

The Hokies will need to find their offense—and keep those emotions running high—when they face the LSU Tigers on Saturday.

#10 Louisville

Brian Brohm threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Cardinals decimated Murray State 73-10 on Thursday night.

The Cards looked flawless—a trend that will likely continue next weekend against Middle Tennessee.

Brohm went 18 of 23 for 394 yards as the Cardinals put points on the board in every quarter.
