Bad Night in Milwaukee: Brewers Beat Reds 3-2

Russell WightMay 30, 2009

The Brewers beat the Reds 3-2 in the series opener last night at Miller Park.

Johnny Cueto gave up just three hits, but two of those were home runs.  The loss drops his record to 4-3.  Cueto maintains his excellent earned run average (2.53).

The Reds were only able to come up with five hits.  Two of those were by Ramon Hernandez, who saw his batting average climb to .299.  He hit his third home run of the season with Jerry Hairston on base in the fourth inning.

Brandon Phillips did not start the game, but did pinch hit for Ryan Hanigan in the ninth.  Phillips tried to bunt his way on and was unsuccessful.  This was mind-boggling to me.  Phillips is capable of tying the game with one swing of the bat.  If his thumb is not well enough to swing away, then he should not have entered the game.

The most disturbing news of the night came early in the game, before the Reds took the field in the bottom of the second.  The dizziness that has plagued Joey Votto did so again last night.

Dusty Baker met with Walt Jocketty, Mark Mann and Votto privately after the game.  All were very tight-lipped, but the indication is that a roster move is coming.  Baker did say that Votto will not play tonight.

This is becoming a very scary situation.  I am more concerned about Votto's health than anything right now.

The Reds will try to get back on the winning track tonight.  It will be Aaron Harang (5-4) against Dave Bush (3-1).
