Terrell Owens: Offensive? Offensive Savior

Scott WildermuthMay 29, 2009

Clearly Buffalo's biggest change in personnel is bringing in Terrell Owens, which can add a lot to the offense.  However, with Dick Jauron’s coaching mentality, look for the offense to maintain a run first strategy and attempt to dominate the time of possession.

Since TO is gracing the Bills with his presence, they will have to open up the passing game, which should be beneficial as long as Edwards can get their dynamic receivers the ball.

So what does the addition of TO really mean for the Bills?  Well, he becomes the main possession receiver, who will spend the bulk of his time over the middle, although he still offers that explosiveness and down the field threat.

Pair him with another top 15 wide receiver, Lee Evans, and this duo could certainly do damage (especially when you play the Dolphins and Pats twice—both trotting out a weak secondary).

Evans becomes the deep threat that Buffalo thought he would be when they drafted him out of Wisconsin.  In addition, Evans has consistently been double teamed throughout his young career due to a lack of talent and miscast wide-outs.  He has yet to play with someone of TO’s caliber.

Since TO will have the safety lined up over top of him, Evans will be much more free to run the deep routes—his bread and butter.

Now, here’s the kicker; Josh Reed will finally assume a role that he can excel at, instead of masquerading as a second option.  He’s a perfect slot guy for the Bills, as a great route runner with plus hands.  Throw in James Hardy and Roscoe Parrish and you may have the deepest five wide receivers in the NFL in 2009.

Even if all of the wide-outs are covered, both Lynch and Fred Jackson are great receivers out of the backfield.  Look for them to be much more efficient in their YPC.

Hopefully for Bills fan’s, Owens’ addition will also mean less touches out of the backfield for Lynch and Jackson.  As a Bills fan, it would be great not to see as many running back screens or a half back dive play on third and seven this season. The Bills will find something down field this season.

Other than catching at least 80 balls and giving Edwards an elite target, Owens will most certainly increase the Bills' paltry points per game total, while taking pressure off the defense.  Owens will bring more wins to the the pride of Lake Erie.
