Can The Cubs Get Mark DeRosa Back?

Richard MasonMay 29, 2009

Watching the Cubs lately can make just about any person cringe.

Scales, Fontenot, Hoffpauir and Fox can play multiple positions, but none on any regular basis. Watching the Cubs 2-1 win on Friday afternoon, it was, at times, comical and sad.

Scales was was shaky at third base at times, and in the ninth, he made an error that could have cost the Cubs the win on a grounder to third.

Fontenot played at second base today and can play second, shortstop and third, but seems best at second. Theriot has been at shortstop for most of the season and done a good job thus far.

The youngster, Jake Fox, brought up from the minors in the middle of the week is a first baseman, but everyone knows Derrek Lee is there, and that is also Hoffpauir's best position.  Fox has played some third, and when Ramirez went down with his injury, the Cubs didn't put Fox at third to get some work in.

He was a hitting machine at Iowa, but he has no chances at third, where the Cubs could have used him. If this has you all confused like me, think how it must be for the players?

The Cubs have too many people who can play the same position, but only Theriot has hit for average. Fox has a chance (he had 17 homers and was hitting over .400 at Triple A when called up) but what is his position?

Lee is at first base no matter what but his bulging disc in his neck has affected him more than the Cubs want people to know, he has really no power and average is down as well. With Ramirez out, Lee hurting, trading Mark DeRosa seems to be more and more, a very bad trade.

The Cubs did not have these infield problems when DeRosa was here and he could play all the infield positions except first base. He was a proven steady bat and steady fielder. He sure would look good now with Ramirez out, and Fontenot's hitting woes. DeRosa could also play the corner postion's in the outfield and he could really help a manager Lou Pinella when players are hurt or not hitting.

The Cubs have tried to replace DeRosa with Ryan Freel and Aaron Miles, but they have not and will not replace DeRosa. The Cubs have got to clean up their infield mess and they cannot contend like this.

The answer is simple: get Mark DeRosa back and quick!
