New Offense, New Philosophy

Jason BoudreauMay 29, 2009

Changes for the Broncos have come rather quickly in 2009, starting with new head coach Josh McDaniels and his passing attack offense that he used in New England.

The new philosophy on offense will be different from the strong running attack West Coast offense. Bronco fans will see a lot more passing this season with multiple formations and short routes designed to set up the running game.

Along with a new coach and playbook, comes new personal. Not all positions have been affected, but some positions will look vastly different form last season.

Up front the offensive line brings back all five starters that only gave up 12 sacks last season. The receivers are in the same position with starters Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal back, along with new addition Jabar Gaffney who is joining McDaniels from New England.

Where the offensive line and wide receivers are set the running back position will see a new starter for the fourth straight season. There is excitement in the backfield with first round draft choice Knowshon Moreno.

After leaving Georgia and the strong Southeastern conference, Moreno brings in a style of running back the Broncos have not seen in awhile with his ability to run, block, and pass catch out of the backfield. Moreno also has a knack for finding the end zone. Moreno had 30 touchdowns in two years at Georgia.

No change is bigger in Denver this season then the trade of Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears for Kyle Orton and three draft picks.

Orton or Chris Simms will compete for the starting quarterback job and whoever wins the position will have tremendous pressure from not only the fans but Coach McDaniels himself.

McDaniels looks for his quarterbacks to be able to learn quickly and make adjustments on the fly. This offensive system is set up for smart quarterbacks to know their reads and be able to throw the ball all over the field.

One benefit of this new system is being able to use the no-huddle offense.  Under Mike Shanahan the no-huddle was seldom used. Using the no-huddle offense will give the Broncos the opportunity to take advantage of the thin Colorado air.

As players learn this new offensive system, so will the Bronco fans. In the end, the changes made look to be promising
