Big East Football- 2009 Preview: Contenders and Pretenders
In 2008, we saw Cincinnati rise, Syracuse and Louisville fall, and the hatred between Pitt and West Virginia grow. What will see in 2009?
Syracuse(2008: 3-9)--While the biggest story to come out of Syracuse Football is Former Duke Guard Greg Paulus is joining the team, don't expect much from Paulus or the Orange this year. With their schedule including games against Penn State, Minnesota, and the Big East Top. We should expect another poor year from Syracuse.
Louisville (2008: 5-7)--While Louisville basketball had an outstanding year, sadly their football program does not have much to look forward too. With a schedule including early games against Kentucky, Pitt, and Utah, who were 13-0 in 2008, Louisville does not have the talent to be a serious threat. Stick to basketball for now Cardinals fans.
South Florida(2008: 8-5)-- The Bulls are growing, and getting better every year. In 2008, they started off the season 6-1, losing only to Pitt 26-21. While they did lose 3 straight after their 6 win start to finish the season 8-5, you cant rule them out just yet.
The bulls picked up Ryne Giddins, a DE with tons of power and energy and Victor Marc, an explosive athletic RB who will surley fire up thier offense. While I dont expect South Florida to win the Big East, they will not be an easy win, which is why you can not rule them out just yet.
Connecticut(2008: 8-5)-- While 2008 was not that terrible of a year for UConn, do not expect 2009 to be better. The huskies QB troubles and mildly tough schedule will be to much for their young QBs to handle. Maybe a 6 or 7 win season at best. Stick to basketball for now Husky fans, and follow Louisville's lead.
Rutgers (2008: 8-5)-- The Scarlet Knights first game this year is versus Cincinnati, so I guess will all see early on how well Rutgers can play. While they have grabbed some talented incoming freshman, you need experience and all around talent to win games. Maybe in a few years Rutgers, but this year, Knights fans can look forward to another 7 or 8 win season.
West Virginia(2008: 9-4)-- The Mountaineers are a strong team, even though star QB Pat White is headed to the Dolphins, WVU is till a tough opponent. Star RB Noel Devine put up over 1200 yards in only his Sophomore Year. The Mountaineers were the 2nd best rushing team in the Big East. The only question is, can they be a threat without Pat White. If the answer is yes, look out Big East Football.
Pittsburgh (2008: 9-4)--The Panthers are another strong Big East team. While there start RB is headed to Philadelphia to play for the Eagles, you can't rule out Pitt. They have experience, talent and an easy early season schedule with match-ups against Youngstown State, Navy, and Buffalo.
Cincinnati (2008: 11-3)-- The best from the Big East in 2008, they will be looking to build on their success, and they will be. Expect another good season from the Bearcats. With senior QB Pike, who put 2400 yards and 19 TD's last season, likely to return, look for Cincy to be the favorite going into the season, along with Pitt and WVU.
