Assessing The Ravens 2009 Draft

Grading the Ravens Draft

By: Michael G. Dinicola

The Baltimore Ravens 2009 Draft followed a puzzling game plan that did not seem to address the obvious glaring needs of the team.  Those needs would appear to be a true number one receiver to serve as a target for quarterback Joe Flacco, and a solid tight end to be groomed under Todd Heap.

Here's my take on each pick:

Michael Oher- An outstanding physical specimen with tons of potential, Oher should solidify the re-vamped O-line here in Charm City.  With Marshall Yanda returning from injury and the free-agent acquisition of perennial Pro-Bowler Matt Birk, Oher is a part of a line that should be a team strength for years to come.

Paul Kruger – A high-energy player with what football insiders call a “tireless motor”, Kruger is a hard-nosed footballer who fits the Ravens mold.  The Defensive End from Utah will have to overcome what draft-experts called “average speed” and “limited moves on the line of scrimmage.”

Lardarius Webb– This undersized cornerback was also viewed as a stretch pick by many in the know. However, Maryland’s own draft guru Mel Kiper loved the pick, comparing him to Pro Bowler Bob Sanders of the Indianapolis Colts.  He is known for his toughness and bone-crunching hits.

Jason Phillips - The undersized linebacker from TCU was a 4 year starter who led his team in tackles.  He is known for his toughness and should greatly benefit from the tutelage of Ray Lewis.

Davon Drew - The East Carolina tight end could provide depth and a possible future replacement for Todd Heap.  Tight end was a glaring need in this draft, but beyond Oklahoma State’s Brandon Pettigrew, considered far and away the best two-way tight end in the draft, the tight end position was a crap shoot.

Cedric Peerman – The running back from Virginia doesn’t have break away speed, but he is a power runner.  His ability to return kicks may however play in his favor, as this is an area the Ravens hope to improve upon this season.

To sum it up, I would say this was a sub-par draft by Ozzie Newsome.  But Ozzie has surprised me in the past, so the jury is still out.  I see only two or three players making a significant impact this season, which won’t stack up to last years’ tremendous draft boom.

Final Grade: B-
