3-4 Defense: Are The Packers Ready?
Looking at the Packer's off-season, concerned fans everywhere have to wonder, Are the Packers ready? Are they ready to conquer potent NFL offenses that haunted them last year? Are they ready to become a top defense in the NFL?
I would argue that they might just have picked up what they needed in the off-season. With the addition of B.J Raji (pictured) and Clay Matthews in the draft, they may have helped themselves greatly if these two live up to their capabilities.
Raji who started three out of four years in high school had numerous Division I offers, which included Wisconsin. He chose Boston College because of its recruiting dominance in New Jersey. In another twist of irony, his coach would be former Packers assistant coach Jeff Jagodzinski. He trimmed his waist line and got into great shape. When Raji plays motivated, he can be a force to reckon with. In his senior season he had 42 tackles, 16 of which were recorded for losses. Raji can push offensive lineman in the backfield. Raji can clog up those holes which the offensive lineman wish to create. If he has a stellar training camp, which I think he can, he will overtake Ryan Pickett and become the main Nose Tackle (NT) in the new 3-4 scheme.

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Clay Matthews was an interesting pick. Ted Thompson in an uncharacteristic move in the NFL Draft, traded up to get this Linebacker. I also think this was a stellar move. Matthews, a versatile player, can play anywhere in the starting four linebackers. He had a descent senior season at USC, with 56 tackles (9.5 which were for a loss) and also 4.5 sacks. If he can build up more muscle in the off-season, I think Matthews wins one of the outside LB positions and frustrates QB's with his speed and determination.
The Packers also added depth in at the safety position with Anthony Smith. A descent player picked up in free agency adds a little experience to the area. He has 4 interceptions during his NFL career, but did not play a whole lot last year. I believe he will be a descent backup. I am concerned about the age of Al Harris and Charles Woodson, but still think they can cover better than most other CB in the NFL.
Only time will tell. Much of the anticipated success depends on rookies and how they progress and respond to the NFL. If the rookies flop, it's a long season. If they perform like I think they can, the transition will be a success. I think the Packers are ready. Look for the Packers defense to be in the top ten.
