Arsenal Transfer Issue: Who Should Arsene Wenger Sign from the Relegated Clubs?

Callum D'SouzaMay 29, 2009

West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle, and Middlesbrough have all been bitten by the relegation bug, which keeps them out of the Premier League for 2009-2010 (and most likely longer).

This means many talented players will be looking to escape from playing Championship football. Arsenal should look to capture some talented signatures who will be cheap and easy.

My thoughts:

1. David Wheater: Middlesbrough, £3-8 million

A talented, young, experienced defender who is strong in the air and consistent. Wheater has been impressive under Gareth Southgate and would be an adequate replacement if either William Gallas or Kolo Toure departs from the Emirates. Also, if Arsenal fail to attract the likes of Brede Hangeland, Joleon Lescott, etc., then Wheater would be a solid option.

2. Robert Huth: Middlesbrough, £3-8 million.

Huth would probably be one of the best defenders in the world at the moment if his body didn't keep playing up. The former Chelsea center half is a great option for Wenger to get a decent defender who has experience and can be a "rock."

Hutch is tall and wins most, if not all, 50-50 balls. The German would be strong at the back for the Gunners and would hopefully end the defensive problems.

3. Marvin Emnes: Middlesbrough, £4-9 million.

The young and quick winger who can play as a striker would be a useful buy for the Gunners. He would bring nothing that new to the table that isn't already offered by Samir Nasri, Andrei Arshavin, and Theo Walcott.

But he has amazing potential and has a good amount of experience under his belt. Plus with Arsene Wenger's guidance, he could become the next Thierry Henry.

4. Fabricio Coloccini: Newcastle, £4-9 million.

A veteran defender who is calm and reliable, Coloccini would be a suitable replacement for Mikael Silvestre and Philippe Senderos. He has shown great physicality and strength when defending and would add much-needed aggression to the Arsenal defence.

5. Tamas Kadar: Newcastle, £1-6 million.

A versatile teenage defender who can play anywhere in the back line but prefers the central role. Kadar was set to star for the Magpies this season but suffered a broken leg. Kadar has a big future and would be a future investment.

6. Ben Tozer: Newcastle, £1-5 million

Another teenage defender who has a big future. Similar to Kadar, Tozer would be a future investment. Tozer would serve well under Wenger and would benefit from League cup experience.

7. Kevin Nolan: Newcastle, £3-8 million.

A veteran midfielder who would help with the defensive duties in the Arsenal midfield. Nolan would add depth to the midfield and would be superb if Arsenal suffer one of their inevitable injury crises.

8. Steven Taylor: Newcastle, £3-8 million.

A reliable and strong defender who is still relatively young at 23 and has represented the Magpies over 100 times. He was the captain of the England U-21 and has good leadership ability. He is strong and versatile and can add even more depth to the Arsenal defence.

9. Graham Dorrans: West Bromwich Albion, £2-7 million.

A talented midfielder who impressed in the Scottish League, Dorrans is a tall and imposing midfielder who can create space and goals. He is also solid in defence. He would be a smart buy as he would be strong off the bench and can play the holding role well.

10. Gianni Zuiverloon: West Bromwich Albion, £2-7 million.

A young, up and coming defender who can be pivotal off set pieces in attack and defence. He is still only 22 but has a fair few games under his Dutch belt. He would be useful as he can play a number of positions and can add depth to the squad.
