Biggest World Football Blunders of the Weekend: Arjen Robben, Own Goals & Brawls

Greg JohnsonDec 1, 2013

Just when you thought it was safe to step back onto the field of play, it's time to face up to another weekend of World Football blunders.

This week's list features yet more embarrassing misses, goalkeeping disasters and unfortunate twists of footballing fate including mass brawls, referee errors and more.

If you missed last week's selection of howlers, including Artur Boruc's fancy footwork against Arsenal, click here.

Otherwise, click the button below or trigger the arrows in the top right to get started with the latest roundup of criminal errors made in the name of football.

Uche Ado About Nothing

1 of 10

We begin with a header that was so close yet so far from being good.

Had Ikechukwu Uche steered the ball on target rather than pinging well wide, he would have stretched Villarreal's lead to a safe 2-0.

Instead, he missed a sitter and later saw his team concede to miss out on two points, eventually drawing 1-1 with Malaga.

Roma's Unbeaten Run Threatened by the Tamest Freekick of All Time

2 of 10

Although Roma may have fallen behind Juventus of late, i Giallorossi went into their weekend Serie A clash with Atalanta unbeaten in 13 games.

That proud record was put at risk however by a stupefyingly soft goal conceded from a free kick as Davide Brivio's shot somehow eluded Morgan De Sanctis after squirming under the Roman wall.

Even though the 36-year-old goalkeeper managed to get his hands to the chance—usually a fool proof method for saving efforts and preventing goals—his abilities seemed to suddenly shrink to the level of a Sunday League volunteer, acting like a bumper into the back of the net rather than a shot stopper.

Fortunately, Kevin Strootman later replied to make it 1-1, sparing Roma's streak and blushes, yet on this form Juventus may not have much to worry about whether their title rivals remain unbeaten or not.

A Non-League Own-Goal so Bad, the Scorer Subbed Himself off

3 of 10

One of the best goals captured by a camera this weekend was scored in a park in Portsmouth, and came off the boot of a hapless defender trying to clear his lines.

Instead, Sam Hanson had to watch as his hefty connection with the ball ballooned into a spectacular own goal that hit the top corner from 30 yards.

Well aware of the damage he had wrought with his flukey finish, Hanson soon subbed himself off in disgrace.

Bebe Keeps Up Appearances in Portugal

4 of 10

Now on loan at Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira, Manchester United's unlikely £7 million man Bebe continued to confound spectators last week with a pitiful attempt to find the back of the net against Fiorentina.

Having done all the hard work to lose his marker, find space and burst free into the box and in front of an unguarded goal, the forward somehow conspired to side-foot the ball to his right rather than tap home, passing his chance into the grateful clutches of Viola keeper Gustavo Munua.

Don't expect David Moyes to come calling anytime soon, Bebe.

Chilean Sunday League Match Kicks off in a Big Way

5 of 10

Tempers flared at a Chilean non-league game at the weekend, with a reckless challenge descending into a full-on brawl involving spectators and players that brought proceedings to a premature ending.

Surprisingly, this isn't the only act of mass violence in this week's list as you'll see later on in our selection.

Three Porto Stars Combine to Fail Miserably

6 of 10

Jackson Martinez, Eliaquim Mangala and Silvestre Varela are some of the most wanted transfer targets in Europe at present, yet regardless of their hype the trio just couldn't get the ball in the net against Academica in the Primeira Liga.

First Martinez had his shot saved before Mangala's rebound shot pinged against the post with a second rebound fired high and wide by Varela.

Not only did the players let at least two easy chances go begging, Porto—a club not used to losing in their domestic league—went on to lose against their far less fancied opponents.

That loss saw the club's 53-game unbeaten streak stopped in its tracks with Academica recording their first victory over the Dragons in 43 years.

Even more damaging for the two-time champions of Europe, their failure left the door wide open for their arch rivals Benfica and Sporting to take advantage in the title race.

A bad day in the office all round.

Rival Fans Exchange Explosives in Bosnian League Game

7 of 10

While Zeljeznicar reinforced their lead at the top of the Bosnian league with a 1-0 win over second-placed Borac, their clash was far from conventional or straightforward, with the match put on hold before half-time, as the two clubs' fans traded firecrackers mid-game.

Soon, pyrotechnics were overwhelming the stands while explosives popped throughout the stadium.

The match officials and players stayed on the pitch until it was safe to continue.

Robben Meets a Real Life FIFA Physics Glitch Mid-Celebration

8 of 10

Arjen Robben was the man of the match for Bayern Munich against Braunschweig, scoring a brace as the Bavarians ran out as deserved 2-0 winners.

Yet the Dutchman was forced to suffer the ignominy of failing his celebration as his knees caught on the turf to prevent him sliding, and handing the winger the mother of all grassy friction burns.

Luckily for Bayern, he was able to continue, and slotted home his second later in the game.

For anyone who has ever attempted and failed to slide on their knees either on the pitch, on astro-turf or on a stage while imitating their favourite band, it was pleasing to see a multi-millionaire professional footballer struggle with the same action.

Low Visibility in Romania Leads to High Embaressment for Defender

9 of 10

Remember Otelul Galati?

They were the side that came bottom in United's doomed group stage exit from the Champions League a couple of seasons ago.

Yet while they may have enjoyed a bit of European exposure that year, the Romanians have struggled to build on their success and now find themselves in the annual relegation scrap to stay in the country's top division.

At the weekend, they faced off against survival rivals Viitorul Constanta, falling to a 4-3 to the hosts.

While they couldn't salvage even a point with an equaliser, Otelul's efforts were aided by a late own goal by Viitorul defender Florian Bejan.

Playing through a haze of fog, Bejan found himself with the ball in-front of his goal after a hopeful Otelul attack down the right delivered a cross into his area.

Unfortunately, either due to the poor visibility or the defender's lack of awareness, he jerked the ball into his own goal rather than firing it to safety.

Another Long Range Own Goal? Surely Not!

10 of 10

Time for another long-range own goal, this time from Scotland.

Berwick Rangers full-back Dean Hoskins handed Albion Rovers a bizarre consolation goal in their 2-1 defeat with a 30 yard back-pass that became an own goal.

Watch from 24 seconds in to see the farce unfold.
