Why Didn't Rich Rodriguez Pursue Dan Lefevour?

Erin McLaughlinMay 28, 2009

About a year ago, I remember being disappointed when Rich Rodriguez failed to land Terrelle Pryor.

Michigan held a scholarship for him, only to have him sign with with Ohio State of all teams. Then Michigan still had that scholarship to use. I am not sure what they did with it, but they could have looked north to Mt. Pleasant.

What Dan Lefevour has done at Central Michigan has simply been amazing. He has showed that he was underrated as a recruit coming out of high school. Otherwise, a bigger school would have picked him up.

At the time, Lefevour would have still had two years of eligibility left. Being a CMU alum, I have seen this kid every chance I can. He is taylor made for Rodriguez's system. I know this because Butch Jones runs the same system in Mt. Pleasant.

It is true that he wouldn't have been able to play last year. However, when Michigan failed to get Pryor, we all knew the season was a wash before it ever started.

At least with Lefevour there, the Wolverines would be in better shape for this year. Lefevour would have been there all year to practice and get familiar with his new teammates.

Then Michigan could have entered spring practice with Lefevour as the starter, and Michigan would be right back contending for a Big Ten title.

Where would that leave Tate Forcier? It would actually put him in an even better position. Rodriguez would be able to redshirt him and bring him along slowly. Forcier could really learn the playbook inside and out before he ever plays. He could have also learned from Lefevour for two years.

As a redshirt freshman, Forcier would receive playing time in blow out games. Then when he took over as a sophomore he would be seasoned and the Wolverines would have gotten three good years out of him.

As it stands now, Forcier figures to be a four year starter. Let's be real. He will likely struggle as a freshman. Most quarterbacks do. As a sophomore he will be better but still have some growing pains. Then he will have two solid seasons for Michigan.

Had they gone after Lefevour, Forcier would have three solid seasons. Also Michigan would have a better team when Forcier did take over. The reason is that Lefevour could put Michigan right back on the map this year.

Now I realize that it doesn't do a lot of good wonder what could have been. Maybe Rodriguez did pursue him and Lefevour turned him down. I can't imagine anybody in Mt. Pleasant being upset with him if he wanted to go to Michigan.

As much as I love what he has done with my alma mater, I would certainly love to see him in a place where he will be noticed more nationally. Realizing that it does no good, just imagine what this year's Michigan team would look like with Dan Lefevour as the starting quarterback.
