Oh Ben, Where Do You Think You're Going?
Many people get tired of this subject, but what are Ben Gordon and the Bulls going to do this summer? Well I'll explain.
Ben Gordon turned down a 6-year $58 Million contract last summer and then accepting a one year qualifying offer that is worth $6.4 million. Now I don't hate Ben Gordon, he's a very talented player but my problem is that he's a selfish player, not in the court but in contract Negotiations. As talented as he is, he ruined his opportunity to make big money. No one will and can offer him more than $58 million dollars this summer besides Chicago. Detroit, Memphis, and Oklahoma City have the cap room but I don't think those teams are dumb enough to overpay a one dimensional player (Although I could be wrong). The reality is that Chicago doesn't want to go over the luxury tax and with Kirk Hinrich's and Luol Deng's contracts, the Chances of Ben Gordon staying in Chicago are slim. If he were to stay in Chicago, he would be paid the Mid-Level exception instead and like he's shown he would not play for the bulls for that kind of money long term. The teams that have cap space don't really need him.
Detroit.
After Cleveland eliminated them in the first round in an easy sweep, Detroit faces the reality that they need to blow things up. I don't see Joe Dumars offering a player of Gordon's style a $10 million+ per year deal for 5 years to play for Detroit in a team that needs other types of players unless this was done in a trade.
Memphis.
Anther team that has money but won't spend it on Gordon. I know that Michael Heisley is a guy who doesn't like to spend and more reason not to spend to get Ben Gordon. Both parties would not want to get involved with each other; Ben Gordon didn't like how he was getting less playing time in Chicago when they acquired Larry Hughes, so in Memphis the problem would be worse because he would come off the bench since O.J. Mayo is a better player and also because Ben Gordon does not play point guard and for a player to get paid $10 million+ to come off the bench just won't do for the Grizzlies.
Oklahoma City.
Now Oklahoma city would be facing the same problem as Memphis but also considering since a draft deal to make a trade with the Clippers might happen, there might be some uncertainty of Whether they want to sign Gordon.
As you can see those teams are not likely destinations because of those problems. The teams that need him though don't have cap room and can offer the mid-level at the most, but I'll give you a list of teams that could use him.
Cleveland.
Yeah, yeah, I know, but since Delonte West works in the starting lineup it seems like a good place. Cleveland could make Delonte come off the Bench and start Gordon or Vice Versa, it could take the scoring and shooting pressure off of LeBron and Mo Williams and Mike Brown can help mold Ben Gordon to a better defensive player.
O.K. this is a bad place since he won't get a long term contract but hear me out. Mike D'Antoni likes a high scoring small player for his run and gun offence but that's the only thing going for that to happen.
For the past two seasons the Hornets biggest need was scoring off the bench and that's mainly the reason why they got whooped by Denver. Because the only efficient offence they got for the whole team was Chris Paul, I mean James Posey was signed for that reason and look how that turned out. Although I think James Posey will have a better year next season.
This post-season showed many weaknesses for the Spurs and proved Gregg Popovich right about them needing Manu to have a chance to win in the playoffs. Ben Gordon works for the Spurs since he's not just insurance for the Spurs if Manu is out but also brings someone who has no fear when the pressure is on the game, (Something Roger Mason and Matt Bonner didn't show in the Playoffs) But again this has a slim chance of happening.
Ben Gordon is a very talented player, Whether he gets what he wants is yet to be determined.
