The Day Jay Cutler Took Over Facebook

Robert ChilverMay 28, 2009

For over ten years now, there has been a glaring hole in the Chicago Bears backfield.

Dave Kreig, Rick Mirer, Steve Stenstrom, Moses Moreno, Shane Matthews, Cade McNown, Henry Burris, Jonathan Quinn, Chad Hutchinson, Rex Grossman.

These are a just a few of the men that only dug that hole deeper and deeper.

Then, on the afternoon of April 2, I checked my facebook page.

"We Got Cutler!". "Cutler Baby!" "Finally a QB!"

As each second passed, a new friend posted their excitement. Even the non-football fans were caught up in Cutler-mania.

"I don't know who Jay Cutler is, but we got Jay Cutler!," posted one girl.

And just like that, the hole was filed.

For the first time since the late 1980s, the Chicago Bears will enter the preseason without a question mark at quarterback. Jay Cutler is here and finally, for once, the team can concentrate on filling other holes.

Going into the free agent signing period and 2009 NFL Draft, the most obvious hole was at wide receiver. With an arm like Cutler behind center, it's important he has the targets to flourish.

The problem is Devin Hester is still learning the wide receiver position, Rashied Davis caught a case of the drops last year and Earl Bennett has almost no NFL experience. The team tried filling the gaps with declining veterans, but Brandon Lloyd and Marty Booker proved to be a bit past their prime.

Now Cutler takes over but he'll have to go without proven any bit-time talents like Brandon Marshall of the Broncos.

The Bears are hoping that Cutler and fellow Vanderbilt University graduate Earl Bennett can recreate some of their chemistry from college and GM Jerry Angelo did get some promising prospects in the draft.

Juaquin Iglesias was a steal in the third round as he got some big game experience at Oklahoma. He was the top target of probable 2010 first round pick Sam Bradford and he should get an immediate chance to start on the Bears, most likely from the slot.

Another player helping to fill the receiver hole will be tight end Greg Olsen. Olsen is a big target that can also line-up outside the box. He should be Cutler's number one target in the red zone.

The rest of the Bears offense should be fairly stable. Cutler and running back Matt Forte should man the backfield for years to come. The offensive line is aging but the signing of Orlando Pace and Kevin Shaffer should provide some depth.

On defense, Tommie Harris should bounce back strong as long as he stays healthy. Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs are among the top linebackers in the game but there is still an opening alongside them. The Bears are currently trying to sign free agent Pisa Tinoisamoa, which would be a nice upgrade over Hunter Hillenmeyer or Nick Roach.

Charles Tillman is set as the top cornerback and the Bears are counting on Nathan Vasher returning to top form. If not, rookie DJ Moore could challenge him for time.

Overall the Chicago Bears are no doubt ecstatic about their off-season. It's rare you can bring in proven quarterback like Jay Cutler and his boost to the offense should help hide other minor holes.
