The Merseyside club is looking to simply get back into the win column after three straight draws stunted a then two-game winning streak. Meanwhile, Stoke are tied for 14th in the table but have five points in their last three appearances.

Top Storyline: Can Everton Stay Near Top Without Baines?

Everton may have been happy to exit the Merseyside derby over the weekend with one point after the 3-3 draw with Liverpool, but they lost star left-back Leighton Baines in the process.

According to ESPN FC's Mike Whalley, Baines fractured his toe in the contest and manager Roberto Martinez has indicated that he could be out through the end of December.

The 28-year-old defender has been one of the leaders of Everton throughout recent memory. On the squad since 2007, he's grown from an unheard of newcomer to one of the most talked about back-line players in all the EPL.

Baines has been a huge reason why Everton have given up the sixth-fewest goals in the league this season, and his absence beckons the question of whether the defense can hold up in his absence.

This is only amplified by the notion that they're only one point out of the top four and three points shy of second place.

Phil Jagielka is also back in the defense and typical midfielder Gareth Barry is a formidable option to log some minutes in the back. Those two veterans will have to play a huge part in Everton's defensive efforts for them to stay in great position in the table.

Of course, if Romelu Lukaku builds off his recent form—two goals against Liverpool last week—defense may not end up being too big of a factor.

Prediction

Stoke have impressed with their last three results, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. The lone win in that span was over Sunderland—tied for last in the league.

Meanwhile, Everton have avoided defeat in their last five Premier League matches and have the veteran leadership in the back to minimize Baines' absence—at least against one of the lesser talented squads in the table.
