Next Man Up (This Time It's the Coaches' Turn)

joshua stahlMay 28, 2009

Unlike last year, the big question going into training camp won’t be about the health of Bob Sanders, Peyton Manning or Dwight Freeney. Or who's gonna step up while they're out. Instead all eyes with be on first year Head Coach Jim Caldwell and the holes left by the retirement of Offensive Coordinator, Tom Moore and Offensive Line Coach, Howard Mudd.

There’s already buzz about internal communication problems regarding the offense –  that buzz is mainly being generated by QB Peyton Manning.

Manning, who will be without the services of his mentor and offensive Guru Moore for the first time since coming into the league in 1999, has been critical of poor communication regarding the offensive coaching changes.

"I can't tell you what's going on. I will say I don't think it's been the most properly communicated scenario around here," Manning said.

"I'm not sure everybody's on the same page in this building,” he added. “I'm just trying to focus on playing quarterback well.''

There has been talk of Moore and Mudd signing on as consultants to the team, but for now that’s just hearsay. Although, that hearsay is coming from Colts Owner, Jim Irsay.

"We've made it through a number of transitions in the past and we'll make it through this one," Irsay said about losing Moore and Mudd. "As an organization, we've always responded well to challenges.”

For now, the Colts are sticking to their battle cry of, next man up. Which means the Colts organization and Colts President Bill Polian is expecting Caldwell, new Offensive Coordinator Clyde Christensen and new Offensive Line Coach Frank Winters to stand up and deliver the same near perfect performances that they, as well as their fans expect, year-in-and-year-out.

Next man up!
