AC Milan vs. Genoa: 5 Things We Learned

Matteo BonettiNov 24, 2013

Milan managed only a 1-1 draw against a resurgent Genoa side, and the Rossoneri's struggles have reached new highs.

The lone goal came from Ricardo Kaka after a darting run was met by the pinpoint long-pass from Nigel De Jong. Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as Urby Emanuelson committed a foul in the penalty box and Alberto Gilardino slotted in the penalty.

Without further ado, let's take a look at five depressing things we learned from the match between Milan and Genoa.

The Matri Experiment Has Been an Utter Failure

1 of 5

Milan's summer signing of Alessandro Matri has been an abomination so far for Milan.

Not only has he failed to recreate even a fraction of the form that made him a hot commodity at Cagliari, but he has been incredibly unlucky as well.

It'll be interesting to see how the Rossoneri handle the Matri situation going forward, as the player is approaching his 30s and probably won't get much playing time once the likes of Stephan El Shaarawy and Giampaolo Pazzini are back from injury.

Balotelli Has Lost His Penalty Mojo

2 of 5

Mario Balotelli's incredible penalty run of 25-for-25 ended against Napoli a month ago, but that didn't stop a few amusing ticker websites from sprouting up on the Internet.

Balotelli's first-ever miss came at the hands of Pepe Reina, while Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin managed to follow suit by easily stopping a rather poor Balotelli penalty shot which was much more central than what we'd usually expect from his set-piece brilliance.

Something needs to happen to reignite the fallen star of Balotelli. It seems that most of his best chances on goal are unfortunately deflected.

Kaka Is the MVP so Far

3 of 5

There's little doubt that Kaka has been the most valuable Milan player so far this season.

Ricky joined Milan on a free transfer and even claimed that he'd refuse to accept his salary while he was injured for a month shortly after signing with the Rossoneri, as reported by Matthew Leach of The Guardian.

Apart from scoring a few crucial goals, Kaka has shown curious Milanisti that he still has a little left in the tank and can be a valuable asset for the next season or two.

Massimiliano Allegri on Razor Thin Ice

4 of 5

The image of coach Max Allegri shouting in bewildered rage is one that has become a recurring storyline for Milan this season.

With the possible replacements being groomed in the shadows like Filippo Inzaghi, one has to wonder just how long this can go on for. A new tactical philosophy is needed. The players look defeated and seem to have the most arduous of tasks of mounting any sort of comeback.

Enough Is Enough

5 of 5

Thirteen matchdays. Fourteen points. Enough is enough.

The last time Milan started so poorly was back in 1981, the dark period where the club was relegated to the purgatory known as Serie B.

Seeing a historic club like Milan undergoing such domestic agony is painful for any long-time football fan, as a once-proud club has reached a level of depressing anonymity, and it's almost certain that they'll fail to qualify for any sort of European football next season.

A major overhaul is due, and the club will need a clear direction going forward, one that doesn't contradict itself by signing players in their twilight when the revolution called for building from within.
