Australia vs. England Test Series 2013: Day 3 Scorecard and Recap from Brisbane

Aidan ReynoldsJun 6, 2018

Australia's record at the Gabba seemed perfectly safe after three sessions that took the first Test further from the grasp of England on Day 3.

After Australia resumed on 65-0, England got the start they wanted with two quick wickets for 10 runs. Stuart Broad was again involved, taking a wicket and a catch to get his side back in contention.

However, David Warner had other ideas and, along with Michael Clarke, he put on 138 for the third wicket.

England's batting collapse allowed the Australians the opportunity to open their shoulders, with Graeme Swann in particular taking a pummelling.

Both Warner and Clarke played with freedom and comfort, and Clarke's perceived vulnerability against the short ball disappeared as he clubbed the fast bowlers to the boundary.

Each batsman made a fine century, but even their dismissals brought no respite for the visitors.

Brad Haddin made a quick half-century and Mitchell Johnson joined in the fun with 39 not out before Australia declared at 401-7.

In chasing 561, England had a mountain to climb as Michael Carberry and Alastair Cook walked to the middle in the final session of play.

Carberry was one of the lone bright spots in England's first innings, so he will have been keen to build on that performance. However, when things aren't going for you, they really aren't going for you.

Carberry fell with just one run on the board, going back to defend a Ryan Harris delivery that pitched just back of a length. The ball dropped from his bat to the ground, then back on to the stumps and Australia sensed blood.

A strong innings was needed from Jonathan Trott in order to allay the demons of the summer. Johnson was to grant him no such luxury, bowling with pace and hostility.

On occasions it looked like Trott was actually trying to get himself out. He came out swinging from the very first ball, looking hopelessly out of touch and seemingly oblivious to the legside trap Clarke had set for him.

Trott duly obliged by clipping Johnson to deep midwicket and England's hopes looked dashed at 10-2.

Cook and Kevin Pietersen remained at the crease until the close of play, with England still requiring 538 over the next two days for what would be a sensational victory.

It's safe to say that is the last thing on their minds right now. It's all about survival—and praying for rain—if the tourists are to avoid going into the second Test 1-0 behind.
