Australian Press Savage England Cricket Team After Dismal Day in Ashes 1st Test

Mark PattersonJun 6, 2018

England's Ashes campaign came to a grinding halt on Day 2 of the first Test at The Gabba, with the tourists bowled out for just 136 and Australia opening up a massive lead.

The Australians have been on the wrong end of Ashes scorelines since 2006/07, losing the last three series by a cumulative score of eight Tests to two.

So once in the ascendancy, the press have not held back to enjoy the moment.

Where better to start a look at the Australian papers than with the Courier Mail, the Queensland local which vowed to remove Stuart Broad from all their reporting this series?

They've certainly capitalised on England's misfortune in style:

As for the Sydney Morning Herald, their headline of "Pomicide" is pretty damning:

But while the Australians were gloating, the English media were furious with a poor performance.

Ian Botham of Sky Sports News described the tourists as "inept":

"

I'm not quite sure why England's batsmen struggled so much—there was no reason for it, there were no demons in the pitch. They do it continuously—it's almost déjà vu—and they've done it again here. They've got a hell of a lot of work to do now to get something out of this game. They can forget about winning it but what they can do is fight and try and save it.

"

Geoffrey Boycott of The Telegraph was also furious, particularly with the way England batsmen played off-spinner Nathan Lyon:

"

They've had those three Test matches [in the summer], they've had weeks off, they've had all the backroom staff you could ever dream of, they've had all the gadgets to watch him bowl—and they haven't played him any differently, they've just poked two simple catches to short leg.

"

England will have plenty to do to save the Test, and looking further ahead, get back into the series. But the final word (or in this case emoticon), goes to man of the day, Mitchell Johnson:
