Tuesday Qualification Recap
It was Europe that took centre stage in the qualification hunt this week, with the UEFA playoffs accounting for eight different teams all competing for just four places in the World Cup finals.
Portugal were led to the light at the end of a tunnel by a resurgent Cristiano Ronaldo as Sweden were handed a 4-2 aggregate defeat across the two legs of their tie.
In the build-up to this encounter, attention was firmly focused on whether it would be the Real Madrid man or Zlatan Ibrahimovic heading to next summer's tournament. As things turned out, it was Ronaldo's four-goal haul across the two matches—including a hat-trick in the 3-2 second-leg victory—that ensured his Swedish counterpart will be absent from the competition.
Didier Deschamps' France provided the other headline story in Europe, overcoming the 2-0 deficit suffered in Kiev last Friday to return with a 3-0 drubbing of Ukraine at the Stade de France on Tuesday.
A Mamadou Sakho goal completed the 3-2 turnaround after strikes from Sakho and Karim Benzema pulled Les Bleus firmly back into contention before seeing them through to the World Cup in dramatic fashion.
The night was not without controversy, though, with Benzema's strike seemingly coming from an offside position.
Elsewhere, Greece and Croatia built on some promising first-leg meetings to overcome Romania and Iceland, respectively.
Konstantinos Mitroglou was once again firing on all cylinders for the Greeks, adding another goal to his brace from Friday's meeting and helping his side to a 4-2 triumph on aggregate in Bucharest.
Croatia's 0-0 draw at Iceland last week left their tie more in the balance, but Mario Mandzukic's opener got the ball rolling in Zagreb as they romped to a 2-0 win. The Bayern Munich striker's game was marred by a red card, however.
Ghana and Algeria also made their way through Africa's third round of qualification, but each squeaked through to Brazil in totally different manners.
For the Black Stars, a 5-1 win over Egypt in their first leg meant that a 2-1 loss in Cairo counted for nought, whereas Algeria had to rely on away goals to see them through after drawing 3-3 with Burkina Faso across the two fixtures.
KICKTV confirmed which African nations the two would be joining:
This is just the second time in Algeria's history that the nation will feature at back-to-back World Cups, whereas it will be Ghana's third in succession.
In the inter-confederation ranks, Mexico became the penultimate side to seal their spot on the flight to South America, and Miguel Herrera's men can be proud of the manner in which they dealt with New Zealand.
It was all about the attack for El Tricolor as the Mexicans built on last week's 5-1 triumph in Mexico City, ousting their opponents from the competition with a 4-2 win in Wellington (9-3 overall).

Uruguay and Jordan will be the last two to fight it out for a World Cup finals spot on Wednesday evening and La Celeste look heavy favourites to advance after winning 5-0 in Amman last week.
It would take an almighty collapse from Oscar Tabarez's men and something special from the Jordanians to turn the result around, as 2010's semi-finalists hope to once again make an impact on the world's giants.
