UFC 167 Results: Breaking Down Main Card Winners

Tyler BrookeNov 16, 2013

It was the 20th anniversary of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and UFC 167 was the perfect way to celebrate with some very entertaining fights.

There were five total matches between 10 fighters on the main card, and they were filled with plenty of action. The welterweight title was up for grabs in the main event, and two light heavyweight contenders were looking to move up in the co-main event.

Let's take a look at how each fight ended, breaking down the winners and losers of UFC 167.

Ali Bagautinov Defeats Tim Elliott By Unanimous Decision

Ali Bagautinov controlled the pace in the first round, landing some big shots on Tim Elliott. Ali was nearly caught in a guillotine in the second round, but he was able to break out of it and survive.

While Elliott landed more overall strikes, Bagautinov landed more significant blows, giving him the win by unanimous decision.

The win for Bagautinov was a big one as he took down the No. 7 Elliott. While some were questioning the credibility of Bagautinov heading into this one, he certainly proved to those critics that he's the real deal in the flyweight division.

Tyron Woodley Defeats Josh Koscheck By Knockout

This one certainly didn't last long.

Tyron Woodley got off to a quick start, knocking down Josh Koscheck early. While Koscheck was able to hold on, he kept getting knocked down and was eventually knocked out by Woodley in what was a simply dominating performance.

The win itself doesn't do a whole lot for Woodley, but at least he was able to get one. He had lost two of his last three fights and really needed to do something to start turning things around. For Koscheck, his career may be coming to a close fairly soon as he's currently 35 years old and has lost three straight fights.

Robbie Lawler Defeats Rory MacDonald By Split Decision

The first round of this fight went without much drama. However, Robbie Lawler was able to land a couple of very nice shots at the end to get the action going.

It wasn't until halfway through the second round that we saw the first takedown of the night, with Rory taking down Lawler. While MacDonald stayed on top of him, he didn't do much damage until the very end of the round.

Then things got crazy.

Lawler landed some big shots on MacDonald and kept them coming. However, Rory kept in it and went the distance, even landing some big elbows at the end.

However, Lawler pulled off the big win and came away with a close win.

It was a big upset for Lawler as Ares came in with all of the hype. Now, Lawler is on his way to becoming a real contender in the welterweight division, while MacDonald's chances have taken quite a hit.

Rashad Evans Defeats Chael Sonnen By TKO

This one was supposed to be a pretty intense battle between two great fighters, but it was a very short fight.

Rashad Evans was able to take Chael Sonnen down in the first round. Then, Evans landed a strong elbow on him to stun him. After that, it was only a matter of time before Suga let loose, landing blow after blow on Sonnen before the ref had to call the fight.

While it was a convincing win for Evans, it certainly isn't going to throw him back into the ring as a contender for Jon Jones. Evans will have to prove himself a bit more before he can get a rematch for the light heavyweight title. The loss is a big hit for Sonnen, and his days as a top-tier contender may very well be over.

Georges St-Pierre Defeats Johny Hendricks By Split Decision

The welterweight title fight was one that everyone was anxiously awaiting, and it was certainly worth the wait.

Georges St-Pierre kicked things off with an early takedown and tried working a guillotine. After they stood back up, St-Pierre went for another takedown but was met by some hard elbows from Johny Hendricks.

Things were not looking good for St-Pierre at all in the beginning of the second round. Hendricks landed a ton of big blows and stunned St-Pierre, but somehow, Georges held on and landed some solid shots of his own in the second half of the round.

Hendricks started to look tired in the third round, with St-Pierre landing some more blows of his own, making it a much more competitive fight.

GSP made a big mistake in the fourth round by slipping as Hendricks was able to get on top of him and land a number of big blows. By the end of the round, St-Pierre's face was busted up while Hendricks appeared completely fine.

However, St-Pierre just kept fighting, and he was named the winner by split decision after the fifth round.
