England vs. New Zealand: Score, Recap and More from 2013 Autumn International
New Zealand ran out 30-22 winners over England in a pulsating clash at Twickenham on Saturday, with Julian Savea scoring a brace of tries.
England were in trouble early when they slipped back to 3-17 down after just a quarter of the match, but they fought their way back to 16-20 by the interval.
Courtesy of two kicks from Owen Farrell they took the lead briefly, but a second try of the afternoon from Savea put the All Blacks back in front, and from there they had enough to close out the victory.
It was a rip-roaring affair, however, and a stern test of the world's best side, who will end 2013 unbeaten if they can overcome Ireland next week.
It also atoned for last season, when New Zealand were stunned 38-21 by England at Twickenham—their last defeat.
The Twickenham crowd would have been forgiven for fearing the worst when Savea eased through to open the scoring after just two minutes.
England closed up thanks to the first of five penalties from Farrell, but Kieran Read finished after a bulldozing run from Owen Franks to stretch the All Blacks' advantage.
The home side needed a change of momentum, and they got it when Joe Launchbury got over the line after a spell of England pressure.
Thereafter Dan Carter limped out of his 100th Test match with an injury, and Read found himself sin-binned for coming in from the side—suddenly England had an opportunity to close the gap.
Having moved to within four points by the break, Farrell then struck twice more to nudge England in front. With his opposite number Aaron Cruden having knocked a kickable penalty into the post, it suddenly looked as if history would repeat itself.
But the All Blacks, who appeared rattled with Craig Joubert's refereeing of the breakdown, recovered their composure and Ma'a Nonu laid on what proved to be the decisive try for Savea with a quarter of an hour to go.
Cruden converted it and knocked over another kick to see New Zealand safely through to victory.
There were no shortage of positives in defeat for England, but it was still the All Blacks who went on to record their 28th victory in the 36th meeting between the two sides.
