England vs. New Zealand Rugby 2013: Prediction, Preview and Key Players

Tom SunderlandJun 8, 2018

England take to the Twickenham stage on Saturday hoping to notch back-to-back wins over New Zealand for just the second time in their history.

But it's a tall order for Stuart Lancaster and his men, who are coming up against a team currently reigning as world champions, unbeaten in this calendar year and riding a wave of dominance which may be yet to reach its crest.

Steve Hansen's side travel to London this week on the back of some prolific form, including a Rugby Championship in which they outplayed the Southern Hemisphere's finest, winning all of their games for the second successive year.

Pillars of rugby both north and south of the equator, English fans couldn't hope for a bigger test of their mettle to cap off their November internationals series and have a fierce test ahead of them.

Date: Saturday, Nov. 16

Time: 2:30 p.m. local time (GMT)/9:30 a.m. ET

Venue: Twickenham, London

England One to Watch: Chris Robshaw

The first few weeks of England's November Tests have been a big test for Chris Robshaw, but the returning captain has so far emerged with a gleaming record after outings against Australia and Argentina.

Playing at openside flanker, the Harlequins hero has a massive examination ahead of him opposite Richie McCaw, arguably the greatest No. 7 in world rugby today—or indeed ever.

The breakdown is where these two will likely decide the victor, but Robshaw has shown an uncharacteristic thirst for attack in recent weeks and even scored his first Test try against Australia, albeit only from a couple of yards out.

The veritable leader of his team, Robshaw will be absolutely essential in ensuring his side can be urged to a shock win against the All Blacks this weekend.

New Zealand One to Watch: Julian Savea

With Cory Jane dropping out of the squad this weekend, Julian Savea returns to Hansen's line-up looking to replicate the form shown throughout the course of the Rugby Championship.

There, the youngster was a terror, showing that those who claim he could be heir to the Jonah Lomu throne may be on the money.

However, Charles Piutau has been mightily impressive in Savea's absence and has shown that he, too, is a whizkid winger for sides to worry about on the international stage.

Chris Ashton has looked good since coming back into the England setup, but Savea will be a bigger test of the Saracen's defensive skills than he'll have faced in a long time. Speed-wise, Ashton may be in the same category, but there would appear to be a gulf in the physical stakes.

That being said, only after kickoff will we get a sense of who might emerge on top of what should be a thrilling high-speed pursuit.

Prediction: England 22-29 New Zealand
