Is It Better To Receive: Baltimore Ravens Have Yet To Answer

VeRonda WicksMay 26, 2009

I know, I know…it is better to give than receive, right? But in the Baltimore Ravens’ case, it is much better to receive...a receiver, that is. The gaping hole that exists in the receiving squad is bound to be the resounding weakness for this team in the upcoming season.

The defensive prowess of the Ravens is without question, and now, now the offense is seeing the light of day with Joe Flacco at the helm, but where are the clutch receivers? The NFL Draft left the Ravens, once more, with a question mark at this position. Or maybe it can be said that the Ravens left the NFL Draft with a question mark at this position. The latter is an especially sad reality.

Last season, Derrick Mason made it happen all by himself, and why? Well, who else could step up and play at a high level? Well, Demetrius Williams, with his exceptional potential, was hurt and has been injured every season of his career. Mark Clayton came on at the end of the year, but the Ravens are still without that big target who can stretch the field.

The apparent problem that the Ravens will face with this hole at the receiver position is that without a prime time specimen, other teams won’t have to deal with preparing a defensive game play. Teams have to prepare for the likes of Terrel Owens and Larry Fitzgerald, but there isn’t an exceptional talent within the Ravens squad for teams to plan for, and this could hurt them this season.

It might be worth noting that the Ravens’ free agents, Eron Riley and Isaiah Williams, along with the newly-acquired veteran Kelley Washington, are ready and waiting for the opportunity. But, the harsh reality for them is that they’ll need to be outstanding and will have a very small time to exhibit their competence. The other possibility is the tight end slot taking up the slack for the receiving core, based upon the growth of the offensive line, which had a good year last year. All of these are possibilities, at best.

Hopefully, the combination of the reliable defense and the newly dazzling offense can combat any impending presence that present itself as potentially pouncing on the Ravens’ weak point. If not, the Ravens are in for a long season.
