Grand Slam of Darts 2013: Daily Scores, Results, Schedule and More
Wolverhampton Civic Hall plays host to the William Hill Grand Slam of Darts 2013, bringing together the biggest names in darts to contest the seventh edition of this £400,000 tournament between November 9 and 17.
The Grand Slam is something of a special event due to its cross-code appeal, bringing together players from both the Professional Darts Corporation and the British Darts Organisation.
Reigning champion Raymond van Barneveld will face 2013 World Youth Championship finalist Ricky Evans in his opening match this year to kick off the round-robin stage which splits the 32-strong field into eight groups of four players.
There's sure to be plenty of competition in the early exchanges with only the top two from each group qualifying for the knockout stages, and top seeds Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen and Simon Whitlock will need to hit form early to ensure they progress.
Whitlock knows only too well the cost of complacency in this format having crashed out of the tournament at the group stage last year after taking his foot off the gas after recording two opening wins.
The Australian ace told PDC.tv:
"Every group looks a tough one and mine is no different. It's a fantastic tournament and always a brilliant atmosphere in Wolverhampton so I'm determined to have a good run. I'm going to go all out to win all three matches and then there is no danger of leg difference going against me.
Last year was hugely disappointing but taught me a lesson that, even if you win your first two matches, you can take nothing for granted in terms of qualifying. Every leg is absolutely vital.
"
World No. 1 Phil Taylor heads into the competition in fine form having won The Masters tournament in Edinburgh last week although he missed out here 12 months ago when Michael van Gerwen knocked him out in the second round.
His victory in Edinburgh was his sixth televised title of 2013, however, and the popular favourite will look to make up for his premature exit last year by going all the way to add a seventh major win this season.
With such a strong showing of elite competitors drawn to Wolverhampton, however, he and his fellow top seeds must be at their best in order to come out on top and claim the championship for themselves.

Day 8 Recap
Kim Huybrechts 11-16 Adrian Lewis
Phil Taylor 16-12 James Wade
Recap
World Champion Phil Taylor jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in what had the makings of an ugly affair. Taylor then allowed James Wade to rally back in a major way to bring it to 12-10.
Taylor appeared to wake up after the epic comeback and won the last three. He admits via the official PDC website that he allowed Wade back in it when he should have slammed the door shut:
"It was a great comeback from James and he had me worried. It was a really hard game and I wasn't at my best, but sometimes you have to win ugly.
"
I relaxed and let James off the hook, and I should have kept the pressure on. Not every game will be a convincing win, but I'm just glad to get through.
After defeating his brother in the quarterfinals, Kim Huybrechts finally encountered a superior opponent. The red-hot Adrian Lewis ended with 12 maximums and averaged over 100 in a contest where Huybrechts consistently rallied from behind, but never truly came close to taking over.

Day 7 Recap
Tony O'Shea 6-16 Robert Thornton
Ted Hankey 10-16 Scott Waites
Recap
2010 Grand Slam champion Scott Waites was the story of the day in quarterfinals action. Waites shared the opening four legs with Ted Hankey before moving to 4-2 up with a break. Waites never looked back despite surges from Hankey.
Waites says he enjoyed the experience but was happy to get it over with per the PDC official website:
"It was a good game and good fun, but I'm glad to get it out of the way." "It's difficult to get up on stage and play Ted, but I enjoyed the game and I think the crowd did too.
"
Sometimes you get drawn into what Ted's doing rather than concentrating on your game, and I did tonight, but I also had a bit of a laugh with him as well and it worked for me.
The other match saw a bit of a shocker as Robert Thorton moved past Tony O'Shea 16-6. The three-time Lakeside Championship finalist missed 31 darts at doubles, and Thorton was more than happy to make him pay.

Joining Lewis will be PDC World Champion Phil Taylor, who made quick work of Gary Anderson. Perhaps most dominant of all was James Wade, as he picked apart Paul Nicholson in a one-sided affair.
The highlight of the night saw Kim Huybrechts dismantle his brother, Ronny. The older brother had managed to get to this point without a blemish, but he had no answer for Kim's effective attack.

Day 5 Results
Scott Waites 10-6 Mark Webster

Simon Whitlock 9-10 Ted Hankey
Recap
The highlight of the day was Ted Hankey's remarkable comeback victory over Simon Whitlock. Hankey was down 6-1 at one point, but bounced back for a quarterfinals win.
Hankey credits the victory to his anger at the defecit per the PDC official website:
"Simon played brilliantly but I knew I could play better. I was pathetic in the first session and to be honest I started telling myself off - I took my aggression out on myself and I got so wound up that I found a place that I went into, and I was alright then.
"
Former UK Open champion Robert Thornton and Tony O'Shea will meet after close matchups against Mervyn King and Andy Hamilton, respectively. Scott Waites was in his typical dominant fashion with a major win over Mark Webster.

The Grand Slam of Darts Last 16 will feature some fascinating matches after the Group Stage came to a close on Tuesday, throwing up a clash of brothers in the first knockout round.
Kim Huybrechts and brother Ronny will square off for a place in the quarterfinals after the former lost a 5-4 thriller to Michael van Gerwen, who had been 4-1 down.
On three occasions Huybrechts had the chance to close out the match, but he eventually allowed van Gerwen to take out a 135 in order to top Group D. Huybrechts later commented, per Sky Sports:
"I'm facing my worst opponent possible in the tournament, but I'm still in and that still gives me a chance to win it. I love my brother to bits, I would do anything for him. But the moment I step on this stage he is my biggest enemy. It doesn't matter how, I want to win.
"
Van Gerwen, the 2013 World Championship runner-up, will now meet Adrian Lewis after the 2012 PDC world champion overcame Christian Kist 5-3.
Gary Anderson, the Last-16 opponent of Phil Taylor, should not be overlooked after he thumped Peter Wright 5-1. Anderson posted an average of 111.80, per the official PDC website, joining James Wade in qualifying out of Group B.
Taylor, however, went one better with a 5-0 whitewash of Kevin Painter and remains the tournament favourite.

Hamilton needed a little longer, pushing it to the decisive ninth leg in order to secure passage and get his second win as well.
It was a great match. Hamilton was down 1-2 and then 2-3 to Robert Thornton before going up 4-3. Then Thornton leveled late to get to that ninth leg.
Scott Waites remains perfect, going three for three following his fantastic against Dave Chisnall. After dropping the second leg to make it 1-1, Waites recovered to win the next four and breeze through.
His win was one of three matches on the night that went only six legs. O'Shea and Hankey were the other two to have won by a 5-1 score.

All but one of the eight top seeds made their supposed advantage count on Day 1 with only Andy Hamilton failing to secure a win in his opening match.
Pipe repeated his World Grand Prix of Darts heroics against The Hammer with a 5-2 victory that will see him off to a fantastic start in Group F.
Taylor and Thornton were the only players able to secure straight 5-0 wins on Day 1 with The Power throwing down a stylish early marker to show he means business in Wolverhampton.
The four-time Wolves Civic winner recorded the highest average of the evening (112.16 per the official PDC website) with Gary Anderson posting the second highest (107.14 per PDC) in his 5-1 drubbing of Dutchman Harms.
Taylor spoke to PDC.tv following his first match victory:
"I'm really pleased with that and to end the game with a 112 average sends a message out to the rest of the field that they are going to have to play very well to beat me right now.
"
Elsewhere, 2012 runner-up van Gerwen put last year's disappointment behind him with a 5-3 win over his fellow countryman and close friend van der Voort, who led 2-1 before being punished for missing an early doubles. Van Gerwen roared back to win four out of the final five legs to confirm his comeback.
