The Golden State Warriors Should Stay Away From Brandon Jennings

Steven ResnickMay 25, 2009

There are two necessities for the Golden State Warriors to have any chance of a successful season. The needs are, of course, a point guard which will allow Monta Ellis to not dominate the ball and the other need is a power forward who can get key rebounds.

That being said, there's been rumors the Warriors are interested in Brandon Jennings with the No. 7 pick. From this Warrior fan, the Warriors should show no interest in a player who's as immature as Jennings.

Jennings screwed himself up by not having good enough grades to even play at the University of Arizona where it was reported he was going to play his freshman year. Instead, it forced Jennings to go to Europe to play and he struggled acclimating to the European culture.

Of course, it would be hard for anyone leaving home to go to another country and try to be successful, but it didn't have to be this way for Jennings. He had no choice but to go.

He hurt himself by not getting the grades to get into a solid school and at least grow his game so NBA scouts could actually see what he could do. In his limited playing time in Europe, Jennings proved he wasn't ready to play and considering the fact that Europe has its share of solid players, it doesn't say much for Jennings except he doesn't belong in the NBA yet, but he's in the draft anyway.

This is why even if Jennings is available for the Warriors at No. 7 in the draft they should go with someone else. Someone who has proven himself at the college level or at least more than one year at the college level.

During the past offseason when Monta Ellis injured himself, plenty of Warrior fans talked about maturity issues with Ellis. What about Jennings? He didn't even give himself the ability to give himself the best chance to succeed because he didn't do enough to even get into college.

That's a maturity issue right off the bat. Another reason for Jennings going to Europe was to make money sooner. I'm pretty sure if Jennings had gone to college he still would have been drafted pretty high with the abilities he supposedly possessed, but not many have seen due to his struggles.

It's time for the Warriors to not make the dumb decision of drafting Jennings—he will be another first-round dud. Any other point guard in the draft is better than Jennings be it Darren Collison, Jeff Teague, etc....

The Warriors need to avoid Jennings at all cost. Even if the Warriors do not draft a point guard, the Warriors could always go out and get a free agent or make a trade. The biggest rumors are a return of Baron Davis to the bay area which would great for the franchise, another player the Warriors are supposedly looking at is Andre Miller.

Miller and Davis are both proven point guards who can play in this league. Jennings has only proven one thing and that is all he cares about is money and that's not something the Warriors need.
