Breeders' Cup 2013: Highlighting Top Races on Saturday's Schedule
The 2013 Breeders' Cup features a hefty heaping of action, with Saturday playing host to nine races at Santa Anita Park.
Scheduled to span more than six hours, the series will feature a slew of showcases that will lead to handfuls of cash switching hands at the park.
In one of the day's most prestigious races, a dozen entries will compete for a $3 million prize in the Turf. Later in the afternoon, 10 grass runners will circle the course twice in the Mile.
But these competitions are all serving as undercards for the Breeders' Cup Classic, the festivity's main event for the night, featuring 12 of horse racing's swiftest thoroughbreds.
Here's a look at three of the series' most alluring races.
| Race | Time (ET) | TV |
| Juvenile Fillies | 3:05 p.m. | NBC Sports |
| Filly & Mare Turf | 3:43 p.m. | NBC Sports |
| Filly & Mare Sprint | 4:21 p.m. | NBC Sports |
| Geico Turf Sprint | 5:05 p.m. | NBC Sports |
| Juvenile | 5:43 p.m. | NBC Sports |
| Turf | 6:22 p.m. | NBC Sports |
| Xpressbet Sprint | 7:01 p.m. | NBC Sports |
| Mile | 7:40 p.m. | NBC Sports |
| Classic | 8:35 p.m. | NBC |
Turf
The field looks wide open in this 1 1/2-mile draw.
The Fugue enters the race as the slight favorite, leading with 3-1 odds. But there are several competitors lurking closely behind.
Last year's winner, Little Mike, enters with 6-1 odds at the No. 4 starting position. While he won his last contest at Belmont Park, previous races did not procure such promising results. Before his win at Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes, he did not place during the previous four races.
Point of Entry and Indy Point are also both hoping to stay on point and give The Fugue a run for his owner's money. Point of Entry has won eight of his last nine races, with the holdout being his second-place finish in last year's Turf. Having jockey John Velazquez at the helm gives him a major advantage.
Mile
The name leaves no mystery to the race's length, and the oddsmakers seem to share a similar lack of doubt over who will emerge victorious.
Wise Dan enters the Mile as the overwhelming favorite with 1-1 odds. That makes him the wide choice to win but a rather boring bet with no payoff.
Also running with Velazquez on the saddle, Wise Dan returns to the track that lent him a victory in the same event last year. Winning is normal for Wise Dan, who has finished first in 18 of 26 career starts.
Silver Max and Olympic Glory, however, could provide interesting competition for the front-runner. A Breeders' Cup newcomer, Silver Max, is riding a three-race winning streak while Olympic Glory emerged victorious two weeks ago at Ascot's Weight for Age Stakes.
Classic
Bringing a close to the Breeders' Cup, the Classic features the best of the best fighting for a $5 million purse that trumps the Triple Crown's prize money combined.
It displays some familiar creatures, with Fort Larned looking to defend his crown against Mucho Macho Man, who came a few trots short in second. Mucho Man enters in the sixth post position with Fort Larned, so look for jockey Gary Stevens to do his best to knock down the reigning champion.
Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice will give it a go, but Game on Dude is still receiving the most buzz as the horse to beat. Since finishing seventh last year, Game on Dude has reeled off six straight wins and now will be ridden by Mike Smith, who gave Palace Malice the cold shoulder in favor of this promising horse.
This year's Classic should live up to the billing as another must-watch event.
