World Series Schedule 2013: Viewing Guide for Final Stretch of Fall Classic

Joseph ZuckerJun 2, 2018

There are only two games left in the 2013 MLB season—well, only one if the Boston Red Sox win Game 6 of the World Series.

With a victory, the Sox would clinch their eighth World Series title and their third since 2004.

The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to extend the Fall Classic to the decisive Game 7. It's going to be tough winning two games in Fenway Park.

Top Storylines to Watch

Does Michael Wacha Have Anything Left?

Michael Wacha has been superb throughout the entire postseason. He's won all four of his starts and has an earned run average of 1.00. In 27 innings, Wacha has had 28 strikeouts to just eight walks. Those would be fantastic numbers for any pitcher. Considering the rookie was just drafted in 2012, they're downright scary.

The Cardinals no doubt have their ace of the future.

In the present, though, you have to wonder if Wacha will continue pitching that well when Game 6 rolls around. You can only rely on a great pitcher for so long before he unravels, especially one who's only 22 years old.

It's not an indictment of Wacha, but he's never been in a situation like this in his baseball career. He's on the road with his team's World Series survival on the line. Can he handle that pressure?

If Clayton Kershaw can come undone in the postseason, so can Michael Wacha.

Is There More Craziness to Come?

Game 3 of the World Series ended with an obstruction call bringing home the winning run. Game 4 ended when Koji Uehara picked off Kolten Wong at first base.

Could there possibly be any more magic left?

Sure, you'd love to see something like a walk-off home run to win the World Series, somebody throwing a perfect game or somebody hitting three home runs.

Having another wild ending would be just as satisfying. Those are the kinds of moments you remember for a long time. Are you ever going to see another World Series game end on an obstruction call? Probably not.

What could be next? A game-ending triple play? An inside-the-park grand slam? A hidden ball trick to make the final out?

Hopefully the baseball gods have something else up their sleeves.

Will David Ortiz Come Up Big Again?

Whether the Red Sox win or lose, David Ortiz has made his case to be named World Series Most Valuable Player. Time and again, he's come up with big hits and sparked what has been an otherwise lackluster Boston offense.

In the Fall Classic, the 34-year-old has hit a whopping .733. Xander Bogaerts has the second-highest batting average at .294. Ortiz also has two home runs and six runs batted in.

He's been one of the best hitters in World Series history, according to ESPN Stats & Info:

You have to believe Ortiz will get the big hit if he's given the chance. The question is whether Mike Matheny will allow that to happen. If you're the Cardinals, you must consider walking Big Papi whenever there's a base open.
