Arsenal vs. Liverpool, Nov. 02, 5.30 p.m. GMT, Sky Sports
It’s a case of first vs. third as Arsenal welcome Liverpool to North London on Saturday.
It’s difficult to criticise anything Arsene Wenger’s side have done since their opening-day defeat to Aston Villa. But one thing that can be noted is Arsenal’s opposition to date.
The league leaders have played just two teams in the top half of the table—Tottenham and Swansea—in their opening nine games, so Liverpool will pose them with questions they haven’t yet had to answer.
The centre-back pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have stood up well to the challenges they have faced so far, but this will be their sternest test.
Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have scored a combined 14 league goals this season. The only thing as impressive as their goal tally is their movement both off the ball and on it. They weave in and out of a variety of positions, dragging defenders outside their comfort zones, and they will look to do the same against the Arsenal back four, who often struggle against more agile players.
Where Liverpool will need to be wary is in central midfield. Brendan Rodgers has played five across the back in recent games, with the wing-backs given a license to roam forward, and it will be interesting to see if this is how the Northern Irishman sets his stall out against Arsenal.
In the absence of wide-men Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the Gunners have packed the centre of the park. Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere have been deployed on the wing at different times, but they all ultimately like to leave their post and join the action in the middle.
Rodgers may need to counter this by bringing in an extra midfielder, particularly away from home, but there will be a temptation to go with the formation that has worked considerably well for him this year.
Liverpool currently sit third in the table, two points behind Arsenal, and a win would put the Merseyside outfit in an excellent position. Four of their five opponents after this weekend sit between 10 and 20 in the table, and they will see it as a fantastic opportunity to get hold of top spot heading into December.
For Arsenal, a win would silence the doubters who have questioned the strength of their schedule so far. A win over Liverpool would really affirm their position as league leaders.

Gameweek 9 Top Goalscorer Prediction
Torres may have netted his first league goal of the season against Manchester City but it was his performance that will have had Chelsea fans rubbing their hands in glee.
Torres has endured a troublesome time since leaving Liverpool for Chelsea in January 2011. The Spaniard has repeatedly failed to live up to the lofty expectations that came with his £50 million price tag, and after Chelsea’s public pursuit of Wayne Rooney over the summer, his days as a Blue appeared to be numbered.
But Torres has begun to work his way back into contention at Stamford Bridge. Two goals against FC Schalke 04 in the Champions League earned him a spot in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI against Manchester City, and he repaid his manager’s faith with a goal and an assist in a man-of-the-match performance.
Torres has all but cemented his place for this weekend’s trip to Newcastle.
The Magpies possess the third-worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 16 goals in nine matches, and Torres will relish the opportunity to pick holes in the already porous back four.
Britain’s most expensive footballer has looked sharper, stronger and, now that he appears to have rediscovered his eye for goal, more frightening.
If he can replicate his past two performances at St. James’ Park, then he should bag a few.
