Key Games to Watch this Weekend
Arsenal vs. Liverpool, Nov. 2, 5.30 p.m. GMT, Emirates Stadium, Sky Sports
Who would have thought this fixture would be a top of the table clash when this season’s schedule was announced?
Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool may have slipped into third on goal difference, but his impressive side have more than enough quality to significantly challenge an Arsenal team that has slowed the pace in their last two games.
While the Gunners’ Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund doesn’t impact domestic standings, Jurgen Klopp’s strategy revealed a tactical method that works against Arsene Wenger’s league leaders.
Dortmund intermittently played with speed and threw numbers forward at the Emirates. The full-backs bombed upfield with the ball, while central midfielders sprang into gear on the break.
Robert Lewandowski’s match-winning goal stole something out of nothing, providing hope for Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, a partnership that continues to flourish.
Arsenal appeared a little groggy in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. A better team may have punished the North London club for slowing down, something Rodgers will believe his team can achieve.
Both sides have lost just one Premier League game all season and look to play football the right way. Expect bursts of possession from both teams and enough counterattacking to satisfy the most gung-ho of fans.
Everton vs. Tottenham, Nov. 3, 1.30 p.m. GMT, Goodison Park, Sky Sports
Roberto Martinez is yet to experience a gut-wrenching defeat as Everton boss, as right now, his only league loss came at the hands of Manchester City.
Tottenham’s visit should be marked down as a game in which we can judge both teams’ progress. Each side is currently manoeuvring effectively through a period of transition, but both will be looking to push on with a win at Goodison Park.
Andre Villas-Boas’ visiting team are just one point above their opponents heading into this one. The home side must find a way of shackling Andros Townsend and the runs of Paulinho from midfield, while Spurs need to negotiate the powerful attacking threat of Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley.
Individual battles will decide this one.
Cardiff City vs. Swansea City, Nov. 3, 4.00 p.m. GMT, Cardiff City Stadium, Sky Sports
History will be made during the next round of fixtures as the South Wales derby graces the English Premier League for the first time ever.
Needless to say, this will be a heated and tense affair.
As reported by Ken Gorman of the Daily Mirror, supporters’ group leaders from both sides have teamed up to call for calm in the stands and, most importantly, to eradicate hooliganism that has plagued the fixture in previous years.
Cardiff’s passionate support will be out in full voice as Malky Mackay’s struggling outfit look to climb above their more established rivals. A home win would see Cardiff go above the Swans by one point, while a loss could condemn the newly promoted club to a spot in the relegation zone.
Mackay’s men have just two wins in nine games this season, but just like Sunderland’s derby triumph over Newcastle, snatching three points in the local derby could reverse fortunes in a major way.
