So, who looks in excellent shape for the end-of-season showpiece after this weekend?
Gonzalo Fdez-Castano
Obviously, in the immediacy, the winner of the tournament is looking in fantastic form. Fdez-Castano played superbly over the course of the weekend, shooting rounds of 67 and 68 on Days 3 and 4 respectively.
He showcased remarkable touch and supreme poise to fire himself into a three-shot lead with just one hole to go on Sunday afternoon.
There will be some with slight concerns regarding Fdez-Castano, however. He double-bogeyed the last hole and seemed increasingly nervous when the pressure was on him. But he showed maturity by noting this in his post-round interview, and it is surely something he will learn from going forward.
The Spaniard has been long regarded as one of the most underrated players on the tour, and he's beginning to show what he can do.
Thongchai Jaidee
Jaidee is another player who is little-mentioned amongst the big names on tour, but he too is starting to make a name for himself.
The 43-year-old put in a strong performance in Shanghai, finishing tied for second place with Francesco Molinari. They ended up just one shot off the winner and looked as though they would be involved in a playoff with Fdez-Castano in big trouble on the 18th.
It was not to be, but Jaidee cemented his place in the upper reaches of the Race to Dubai and now sits in sixth position overall. His performance comes as a welcome remedy after he was controversially overlooked for the President's Cup squad.
He is certainly a player to look out for in the season showpiece and looks to be coming into form at exactly the right time.
Thomas Bjorn
It's been an excellent season for the popular Dane.
He outlined his title credentials with yet another positive showing, finishing tied for fifth place in Shanghai.
His experience shone through on the final day of the BMW Masters, as he shot a flawless round of 66. His six-under score contained seven birdies and just the one bogey blemish. He's composed and calm, and he's been there and done it in terms of the big tournament.
Currently, he's in eight place in the standings, and he'd be a very popular winner should he triumph out in the desert.
