New York Yankees M&Ms Can Only Do So Much

Meghan HMay 24, 2009

Well here I am, sitting in Madrid, Spain. Last night I was sitting here as well, except I was glued to my computer. Why you ask? Well unless you are living under a rock (Or you are Spanish) then you are aware that the House that Ruth Built closed its doors yesterday. Que Triste! Una VERGUENZA!

I sat here for a while this afternoon watching clips of the game that I missed and reading up on yankees.com. I stayed up until 2:30 or so watching the ceremonies, the press interviews, and everything else Yankee. I did mute it when they started talking to random fans. I don't really care what they have to say.

Now if one of my friends or family members had been interviewed, well that is a different story. But random Italian Guy from NYC? No thanks. Anyways, the weirdest part (besides sitting up so late by a laptop in a REALLY uncomfortable chair) was how real it all seemed to me.

I'm sitting here across the ocean, watching a LIVE event back in NYC. It all is so real, yet I was so far away. I guess I felt the same way when I was "talking" to my dog Lucy yesterday, poor thing was so confused.

Back to the Yankees. I have talked about this online with people who actually care, but I had the pleasure of talking to Spainards about the stadium this morning over some Cafe con Leche. I'm pretty sure everyone knows that I like "beisbol", which quite frankly, does not hold any ground here in Spain.

FUTBOL! TENIS! Copa de Davis! Spain beat the USA! Whatever. I pretend to be interested, but I have my priorities. The teachers here seemed to be very interested in this "new stadium" phenomenon, but I'm sure I just cemented the "Wealthy American" thing when I explained the reasoning behind it.

However, they did seem very sympathetic towards those whose seats are literally being pulled out from under them.

The differences between Spain and the USA pop out more and more. In a literal fashion. Our countertop was loose and was peeling upwards. In the USA, the countertop would have been ripped off and replaced pronto.

Our landlady, in agreement with most of working class Spain, decided that was not necessary. We came back from school one day to find the counter top had been caulked, in a rather interesting fashion. Lets just say its not peeling upwards anymore and its holding its own.

So if we were in Spain and Yankee Stadium was a countertop, what would happen? I think the owner would say, hm, its not necessary to get rid a good thing for something unnecessary and expensive.

Let's face it, we don't need a marble countertop. I wish Esther was in charge of the Yankees and she would've been like "Hellloooo, no need for a new stadium!" This would have eliminated all the crying and sadness and nostalgia and disappointment over the lack of post-season (well not that) for many Yankee fans.

This theory has to be one of my more intelligent ones. I think I should ditch my day job and work on some other confounded theories such as this one. Maybe there is still time to save the stadium!

Ok, I'm back from Dreamland. However, I think this sugar burst/long rambling entry can be attributed to the delicious Yankees M&Ms on which I have been feasting. Thanks nameless sister who spent $12.99 on them!

Thus far they are worth every penny! I think that its time to go back to watching random Yankee Stadium moments online. Its about all I can do from across the pond. But just wait, whenever they decide to whip out that wrecking ball, I will be SURE that I am there to stand in front of it.
