The Debate of QBs: The Golden Boy Quinn or Underdog Anderson?

Shane Quinn May 22, 2009

One year ago today, I never thought I would be talking about Quinn being the starter for the Browns. Anderson was coming off that Pro Bowl year. I thought for sure that Anderson was the man in Cleveland.  I guess I was wrong.

Anderson was benched, and Quinn started the Broncos game and did exceptionally well in his debut, despite the loss. After that, he played only two more games before being put on the injured reserve with a broken finger. The Browns would never score a touchdown again after the win in Buffalo and would go on to lose five more games.

After the season was over, Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel were both fired after a 4-12 season that ended in turmoil and disarray.

On January 7, 2009, The Browns hired Eric Mangini, who was fired by the New York Jets despite the winning record he had up there. A couple of weeks later, the Browns would eventually hire George Kokinis, who was the Baltimore Ravens' director of player personnel.

During April, Brady Quinn was subject to trade rumors and talks which involve Quinn going to Denver and Cutler going to Cleveland. However, that never came to fruition, as Quinn stayed in Cleveland and Cutler went to Chicago for No. 1 picks. This stirred up the QB controversy issue, again.

The two quarterbacks have their advantages and their disadvantages. They both are certainly good. Let me break them down.

Anderson's advantages

1. Has very strong arm strength

2. Excellent on the vertical game

Anderson's disadvantages

1. Often throws in triple or double coverage which can lead to interceptions

2. Crumbles whenever there's pressure

Quinn's advantages

1) Very accurate

2) Has good poise in the pocket

Quinn's disadvantages

1) Is questionable at best on the deep ball

2) Has average arm strength

Overall, both quarterbacks are very equal and can be good if given the chance. In the end, though, it all depends on what system Mangini is using. If Mangini is using the system he used with the Jets, he might want to use Anderson, but if he decides to use the Weiss-Patriots system, he might want to use Quinn.
