Jamaica vs. Honduras: Score, Grades and Post-Match Reaction

Joseph ZuckerJun 4, 2018

For just the third time in the country's history, Honduras have qualified for the World Cup.

Coming into the night, Los Catrachos needed just a draw in order to secure a spot in the top three of the fourth-round group in CONCACAF. That's exactly what they got, drawing 2-2 with Jamaica in Kingston on Tuesday night, via FIFA.

The Seattle Times' Joshua Mayers has the final standings.

The fans didn't have to wait long for the goals.

Off the first corner of the game and still in the first minute, Carlo Costly found the back of the net. It was the perfect goal to encapsulate Costly's style. The corner was headed up by a Honduran player to keep the play alive, and the forward found himself in the right place at the right time as he hit the ball first time with his left foot that found it's way past the keeper.

Undeterred, the Reggae Boyz immediately went down to the other end of the pitch and got a goal of their own in the third minute. Running down the right flank, Jamaica was able to work the ball into the box. Je-Vaughn Watson got an effort on goal that took a big deflection off Jorge Claros and into the back of the net.

There was some confusion as to who would collect credit for the goal. Eventually, it was chalked up as a goal for Watson.

With two goals in the first three minutes of the match, you thought you could be in for a great end-to-end affair with multiple chances on goal.

If anything, though, conceding that early goal only scared Honduras. They saw what could happen if they let themselves open at the back and decided to play a little more defensively. Looking at a 1-1 tie, they couldn't afford to give up another goal if they wanted to maintain third place in the group.

Luckily for Honduras, they found some breathing room, courtesy of Maynor Figueroa. As a defender, the Hull City player doesn't often get a chance to display his finishing ability.

Figueroa had a free kick just outside the box in the 31st minute. He drilled the kick right into the wall, but it deflected off a Jamaican player and wrong-footed Duwayne Kerr. He tried to react quick enough, but he couldn't get a touch to the ball with his outstretched dive.

The goal should really be on the wall. There's no excuse for a free kick to go through and still be on target. That wall had one job, and it failed in a big way.

On a positive note, it was the first goal for Figueroa ever in World Cup qualification, via CONCACAF.

That would be the last of the action for the first half. Honduras went about to protect their 2-1 lead, and Jamaica couldn't find a cutting edge in the final third.

The second half was a largely uneventful 45 minutes, with the exception of a penalty in the 58th minute. The referee pointed to the spot on what looked a harsh handball call. Rodolph Austin stepped up and slotted the penalty kick home in the bottom right corner.

Honduras weren't going to be burned again. They immediately went about suffocating the life out of the game. Jamaica was Jon Voight, and Honduras were that giant anaconda that coiled itself around Voight and broke all of his bones before swallowing him alive.

Only Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube weren't there to save the day.

Honduras won't care about style points, as they were content to hold out for the draw, and you can't begrudge them for it.

You have to give it to Jamaica, though. The Reggae Boyz could easily have just laid down having already been eliminated from qualification. Instead, they fought till the end and weren't content to hand Honduras three points. Toward the end, it looked like they might snatch a victory, but Honduras weren't going to surrender that third goal under any circumstances.

Key Player Grades

Carlo Costly, Honduras: B+

Carlo Costly is the kind of striker who's not going to stray far from goal. He's your prototypical poacher. Just get him the ball in the 18-yard box and reap the rewards.

That's all it took for Honduras to get on the board in the first minute.

Credit Costly for making the most of the chance. His path to goal looked blocked, but he was able to find a way to thread it in. That's what the best finishers are able to do.

Rodolph Austin, Jamaica: B

Jamaica didn't have too many chances on goal. What little they did have, they made sure to capitalize upon.

There was some pressure on Rodolph Austin as he stepped up to take that penalty in the 58th minute. If he didn't score, the Reggae Boyz almost certainly would've had to settle for a loss. Instead, Austin nailed it, and Jamaica were back into the match.

What's Next

Honduras players need to start packing their bags for Brazil. Before that, though, they've got a date with Brazil on Nov. 16 in a friendly. Jamaica must start focusing on the 2015 Gold Cup. That's their next shot at an international competition.
