Big Baby Has Become the Boston Celtics' Top Offseason Priority
The best thing to happen as a result of the Kevin Garnett and Leon Powe injuries for the 2009 Celtics was the emergence of second year player Glen "Big Baby" Davis.
Davis was able to start many games during the regular season and started in the playoffs as well. He averaged career numbers in ppg as well as having solid rebounding numbers.
As a second round pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Davis was considered undersized and overweight, and with the emergence of fellow teammate Leon Powe and the late season signing of PJ Brown, Davis saw little time in the 2008 playoffs.
But with Powe and Garnett sidelined due to leg injuries, Big Baby had to play well for the Celtics to be successfull.
His improvement is primarily attributed to the addition of a mid-range jump shot to his repertoire. He shoots hundreds of jump shots a day with teammate Ray Allen to improve that shot. It was that mid-range shot that beat the Orlando Magic at the buzzer in Game 4 of the 2009 Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Now that we know Big Baby is a solid player, and a key contributor, the primary focus of the offseason is for Celtics general manager Danny Ainge to re-sign Davis who is a restricted free-agent.
With Leon Powe's recovery and impact uncertain (this spring's surgery was the third major surgery to his left knee), and Kevin Garnett not getting any younger, Davis' services are a major need to the future of the Boston Celtics.
The Celtics do not have a lot of depth in the frontcourt, late-season signing Mikki Moore was a total failure, the preseason signing of Patrick O'Bryant did not work out, and Brian Scalabrine is more of a perimeter threat than an inside one.
Kendrick Perkins was the only F/C other than Davis who consistently put up solid number in the playoffs for the Celtics.
With the Celtics not having many picks in this June's NBA Draft, the need to sign Davis is even more crucial.
The Celtics need to get younger, and signing Davis this offseason along with re-signing point guard Rajon Rondo this summer or next needs to happen to ensure the competitive level Boston fans expect from their 17 time NBA championship team.
