Telling it Like it is: Time for TNA to Add Style to its World Title
Time for a change at the top
It seems that TNA Wrestling is going in the right direction, but it is doing so at a snails pace.
TNA used to be a fresh and up-and-coming product that us wrestling fans found ourselves salivating for while WWE was being shoved down our throats. But that is slowly changing.
As WWE has hit kind of a lull and does not seem to know which direction it wants to go in (go to the new stars like Edge, Randy Orton, CM Punk, and John Cena or stick with the old like Triple H, Undertaker and Shawn Michaels) TNA has had a chance to steal some of the spotlight. While Impact!'s ratings have climbed a little, they have missed their chance.
TNA looks like washed up central every week with the Main Event Mafia. Kurt Angle is strong and Booker T. and Sting both have some left in the tank, but Kevin Nash and Scott Steiner are both doing too much ring work and it is starting to make the entire group look old.
Personally I love the Main Event Mafia idea, but they are really running it the wrong way. They seem to have used the whole MEM storyline as a way to bring Jeff Jarrett back. It should have been used as a chance to take those that are already over and push them through the roof (like Samoa Joe) and should have really been used to take a strong upper-midcard talent like A.J. Styles and make him the face of the company.
Any and everyone who loves this business and has watched TNA from day one will say the same thing. The Phenomenal One is the whole show. He has the look, has the mic skills and has ring work like no other in the company.
He should be going after the Main Event Mafia full force. Feuding with each of them and taking the feud all the way to the world championship. He should have gone through Nash and Steiner with relative ease. The feud over the Legends Championship with Booker was done well, but should have immediately led to him going after Sting. And in the end, Styles should have been topping Angle for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. Sure, it would have taken some creative writing to get the strap from Sting to Angle, but they could have done it, and were close to doing it anyways.
Sure, Mick Foley, with the strap has been kind of fun, but if done properly they could have taken this as a chance to turn Styles into a megastar. They could have Styles in the middle of going after Sting right now and have Angle hiding behind cronies. A perfect setup building toward Bound For Glory.
They still have the time to do right by their top talent. To do right by the fans. And to make a splash and move in a direction to truly make their product unique. They have four PPVs between Sacrifice and BFG ... and they should use it to build up a classic Styles vs. Angle World Title match. Have Styles take the TNA title for the first time in his career at their flagship event, and watch as he continues to carry the company on his back while being the top dog.
