Everton: Blueprint for Success

Fatah Ugas AliMay 21, 2009

In modern day football, we are often led to believe by the mainstream media that money brings success. If there is one club who are trying their hardest to destroy that myth, it is Everton Football Club.

Everton are a well run family club from top to bottom who have steadily improved year upon year, and are continuing to do so.

Bill Kenwright is an Evertonian and bleeds blue & white. He hasn't spent money he doesn't have. He has always backed manager David Moyes, and most importantly he has made sure his beloved club are not in debt.

Kenwright is only 1-of-2 Premiership chairmen who support the club they are chairmen of—the other is Steve Gibson at Middlesbrough. His leadership and backing has been absolutely critical in Everton's growth and improvements.

What Everton, along with 4-5 other clubs, are trying to do is to break up the "Top 4" monopoly, which is by no means an easy task. On such a poor season by Arsenal, they will most likely end up finishing 10+ points ahead of fifth—such is the big gap between the top four and the rest.

But the difference between Everton and other clubs like Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Tottenham are the fact that they are trying to do it on a shoestring budget. Something that David Moyes and Everton do not get enough credit for.

Where Spurs have spent £15m on David Bentley and £16.5 on Luka Modric, Everton are doing it with players like Tim Cahill [£1.5m], Mikel Arteta [£2m] and Phil Jagielka [£4m]. Equally, Manchester City have broken the British transfer record on Robinho [£32m] and are likely to splash big money on other players this summer.

Aston Villa are not shying away either as they have bought James Milner, Ashley Young, and Emile Heskey combined for roughly £25m.

David Moyes, however, has broken the bank for Marouane Fellaini but he is unlikely do it again in the foreseeable future. Instead, Moyes will rely on the current crop of players, as well as the highly rated talented youngsters breaking through from the academy like Jack Rodwell, Jose Baxter, and James Vaughan.

Everton need to keep the dynamic and the spirit at the club in order to move forward to bigger and better things. At this current rate, surely a new era of success won't be too far away.

Whilst Spurs, Villa, and Man City are trying to sign big name players on big money, Everton are operating entirely differently but with a better end product.

Everton should be admired for their transfer policy and the way it is run. Not many clubs can operate on a small budget and yet compete at the right end of the table. Newcastle United, amongst other clubs, could learn and adapt Everton's model. It is a blueprint for success.
