Brett Favre to the Minnesota Vikings and Its Potential Fantasy Football Impact
Lately, there has been a lot of discussion about former Green Bay Packers and New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre coming out of retirement to play this season.
The team that has been prominently mentioned with Favre is the Minnesota Vikings, which, as you may remember, is the same team he said he wanted to play for last offseason.
At first, the rumors were nothing but speculation, but recently there have been reports that Favre has seen orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews for consultation on his injured right shoulder.
Those reports suggest Favre will eschew surgery in favor of rehabbing the shoulder for a possible return this season.
Obviously, having Favre return to the NFL would be a huge deal, so let's break down what it would mean from a fantasy football perspective if he did indeed sign with the Vikings.
First and foremost, if Favre decides to return, it will be with enough time that he could partake in a full preseason with the team. Last season, Favre was traded in the middle of the preseason to the Jets, and it resulted in a slow start for the quarterback. A lengthier offseason of preparation would be beneficial to both Favre and the Vikings.
Now, let's look at the players around Favre. In front of him is one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, though they are better suited at run blocking than pass blocking.
Behind Favre is one of the league's best running backs in Adrian Peterson, who rushed for 1,760 yards and 10 touchdowns and also caught 21 passes for 125 yards last season. Having that caliber of a running back will aid Favre, especially considering the receivers he would have to throw to.
While the offensive line and backfield are set in Minnesota, the wide receiver and tight end positions are more of a question mark. Bernard Berrian would become Favre's top deep threat because of his speed, but Berrian has been inconsistent and isn't good going across the middle.
On the other side of the field is Sidney Rice, a player that has yet to come close to reaching his first-round draft pick potential.
Behind Berrian and Rice is a cavalcade of players with potential that haven't done much in the NFL, including Bobby Wade, Glenn Holt, and Darius Reynaud, as well as rookies Percy Harvin, Nick Moore, and Vinny Perretta.
The addition of Harvin is an intriguing one, however. Harvin played multiple positions in college, often used as a running back or quarterback out of the wildcat formation.
His speed makes him dangerous on screens and swing passes, but he'll need to prove he can adjust to a more traditional offense at the professional level. Still, if Harvin can earn Favre's trust early in the season, they could form a lethal combination.
But there's more to playing for Minnesota than just the players around Favre. If Favre ends up as a Viking, he'll have the luxury of playing in a dome for home games, as well as some away ones.
This may not sound like a big deal because as he proved during his time with the Packers, inclement weather has little effect on Favre. Still, for a player who will turn 40 in October, playing indoors in a regulated climate will only help those aches and pains he'll encounter throughout the season.
Should Favre make the decision to return and sign with the Vikings, we project him to be ranked in the 10-15 range of quarterbacks. He would be a solid starter, but not necessarily a guy that will lead your fantasy football team to a championship.
