Laughter at the Valero Texas Open
Golf is a serious game.
Golf is also a humbling game in that to play it effectively over a period of time you have to incorporate humor in order to survive its hardships on one’s body, mind and spirit.
Laughter as a result of player comments about most everything was evident around the LaCantera Resort last week at the Valero Texas Open. Here are some of the more notable humorous comments captured in player interviews throughout the week.
Guess which player had the last laugh at the end of the week.
Alex Cejka who finished T9 after a Sunday 79 at THE PLAYERS when asked about the distraction of having to do radio, TV and media interviews as a result of playing well. ”It's nice to come back and do this on—I don't want to say on a regular basis, but more often.”
Jeff Maggert when asked if he took advantage of the opportunity to take a shuttle over to the new TPC in San Antonio. “I haven't. I'm just hoping I still have a Tour card when they go over there.”
Paul Goydos after a reporter noted he had a couple of bogeys and asked how he was still able to have a good score?
“By making a couple birdies.”
James Driscoll after shooting 62 on Sunday while hoping to make it into a playoff with Zach Johnson. “I think I had like 10 Top-25s or something, which isn't anything great, but it's not bad to have that many times be like somewhat in the periphery of the hunt. You know what I mean?”
James Driscoll when asked why he decided to come and play in the Valero Texas Open this year. “I've never played here, and that's a shame. I probably should have come here.”
Zach Johnson after winning the playoff when asked if it was an advantage to playing and not waiting like Driscoll did, “It very well could have been. I was certainly rested, and I was able to go to the bathroom after regulation, which was huge.”
Once again it is the winner who had the last laugh though the runner-up has plenty to smile about too.
