Update: Source Close to Brett Favre says 'Brett Doesn't Want Surgery'

Brandon EricksonMay 18, 2009

As Monday, May 18 now ends, we've gone a complete 6-12 curveball on the Brett Favre situation. Surprised?

Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported this morning that "free-agent quarterback Brett Favre is scheduled to meet Tuesday with noted orthopedist James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama, about surgery to repair a partially torn biceps tendon in his right shoulder.

Surgery to release the tendon is considered routine and is expected to be performed by Andrews later this week. Rehabilitation for Favre would be six to eight weeks."

This information seems like something that no one would be surprised by, but would probably draw huge headlines that a normal player would only get after they're signed. Yes, Brett isn't a normal player, but I think that his respectability for what he's done has been negated by selfish pride and redemption for his former boss, Ted Thompson.

But as of 12:38 AM of May 19, ESPN NFL analyst, Ed Werder reported, "Contrary to reports, Brett Favre does not have an appointment with Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday and doesn't consider surgery on his partially torn biceps tendon to be imminent, according to a source.

Favre discussed surgical and non-surgical options with Andrews last week, as ESPN has reported.

Citing unnamed sources, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that Favre was to meet with Andrews on Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama, to discuss surgery on his throwing shoulder and that the procedure was expected to be performed later this week.

Favre, however, remains focused on non-surgical options, including cortisone injections and natural movements like light throwing and bicep curls that might cause the tendon to release naturally, the source told ESPN. If the tendon releases and the pain subsides, Favre is virtually certain to play again. If he has surgery and his arm strength diminishes or the pain remains, he will remain retired, the source said."

As this latest piece is now in place, it is only natural that the Vikings are going to make their big "sell pitch" to Favre soon to keep the 39-year old interested, otherwise, if this drags out, Favre may become disinterested and choose to remain retired.
