Road Trip: Cleveland Browns Should Move Training Camp to South Bend

Erin McLaughlinMay 17, 2009

With football training camps at all levels rapidly approaching, there are two teams that should come together for reasons that would be mutually beneficial. Those two teams are the Cleveland Browns and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

These coaching staffs are very familiar with each other and could really help each other out. Charlie Weis and Eric Mangini both worked under Belichick in New England. Brian Daboll also worked closely with Weis in New England.

Therefore, it may be a good idea for the Browns to take a trip to South Bend this summer for part of their training camp.

There are many advantages to doing this for both teams. Let's take a look at a few.

Advantages for the Browns

The biggest and most obvious advantage for Cleveland would be the reuniting of Weis with Brady Quinn. Let's face it, Quinn is really the most practical option for the Browns at quarterback.

We hear all the rumors that Mangini isn't really sold on Quinn at this point. Well he is a defensive minded coach and may not understand how to use Quinn.

One thing Weis does do well is win with quarterbacks named Brady. Weis could work with that whole offense and really implement his system that Quinn excelled in during his college years.

Once this is done, the coaches and players will feel more comfortable going forward with Quinn.

The other big advantage for the Browns would be that are getting away from Cleveland. Mangini seems to be uninterested in having media distractions.

A road trip will take some away. Certainly, there is always tons of media in South Bend but they will be focused on the Irish and probably Quinn too.

The Browns could focus on football only. The South Bend media really won't affect Quinn anyway. He is used to it.

Advantages for Notre Dame

The biggest benefactor of this would be Jimmy Clausen. After watching him for two years, I have never seen a Notre Dame quarterback with a better arm.

However, he still needs to work on his leadership as well as pocket presence. As an Irish fan, these last two years I have been thinking what if he could work with Quinn.

By bringing the Browns in, Clausen would get plenty of opportunity to learn from Quinn.

Calling it objectively at this point, the difference between the two is that Quinn looks like a QB who is in control of the offense. While Clausen is coming into his own, the chance to practice with Quinn can really take him to the next level.

Another advantage for the Irish is that their defense has some up and coming stars like Brian Smith, Robert Blanton, Manti Te'o, and Tyler Stockton.

Although Jon Tenuta has done really well with them, I think the chance for these guys to work with Mangini and Rob Ryan would only make them better.

Finally for Notre Dame, it is just the chance to practice against NFL players. Imagine how slow the Nevada Players would seem to Irish players after working all summer with the Browns players.
