Picking a Premier League Best XI Team of the Season so Far
The Premier League is still in its early stages but there have been a few standout performers so far this season.
Right now the Premier League table has an unfamiliar look about it, with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal sitting in first and second. Players from both teams are among the best eleven of the season so far, so there's no wonder they are in that position.
A variety of other players, both experienced performers and young talents, make up the squad. Players will have to have played three of the four games so far this season to make the list.
The formation in question will be an archaic 4-4-2 formation, as it was a bit tough to leave one or two players missing in the attacking third.
Here is a best eleven Premier League team of the season so far.
Goalkeeper: Simon Mignolet
1 of 11Simon Mignolet is among a group of goalkeepers with three clean sheets, but he's been arguably the most impressive.
He is the only goalkeeper out of Hugo Lloris, Tim Howard and Jussi Jaaskelainen playing behind a whole new set of defenders. He's been instrumental in preserving points for Liverpool's three wins and the draw against Swansea.
The debut penalty save against Stoke City stands out, as well as some generally commanding goalkeeping.
Right Back: Glen Johnson
2 of 11Glen Johnson has put in consistent and solid performances for Liverpool to start the season, and the Reds may well have gotten a victory against Swansea with him in the mix.
His main competition for this spot, Kyle Walker, has also been effective, but Johnson has provided a better defensive presence. Johnson has yet to showcase his full attacking talents so far this season, but has been very good for Liverpool.
Central Defender: Dejan Lovren
3 of 11Dejan Lovren has been impressive in his introduction the Premier League. Southampton has looked a much more solid output defensively with the Croatian defender in the side.
The early results may not quite be what Saints fans are looking for, but they must be pleased that the defense has seemingly been straightened out thanks to the Croatian. Lovren has been accurate with his long passing from the back, connecting on 37 of his 49 attempts according to WhoScored statistics.
Central Defender: Sylvain Distin
4 of 11Despite being 35 years old, Sylvain Distin continues to be a monster in defense for Everton. The Toffees have conceded only two goals so far this season, and Distin has been a major part of that.
Distin has been strong in the air, as well as on the ground, and still possesses enough pace to keep up with the Premier League's fleet-footed attackers. He was immense against Chelsea as the Toffees picked up a vital 1-0 win.
Left Back: Leighton Baines
5 of 11There should be no surprise here, as Leighton Baines continues to set himself apart as the best left-back in the league.
The Everton star is extremely efficient offensively, and solid defensively. He has yet to tally in either the goals or assists categories, but is still influential with 2.5 key passes per game.
Right Midfield: Andros Townsend
6 of 11Andros Townsend has been a delight in the attacking third for Tottenham this season. He's kept new signing Erik Lamela from a starting role so far, and may retain his spot even when Aaron Lennon returns.
Townsend has brought energy and a direct attacking threat for Tottenham on the right wing, testing goalkeepers with shots and trying to set up his teammates. The only thing missing is the end product, but he's been close.
Central Midfield: Aaron Ramsey
7 of 11Aaron Ramsey's staunchest supporters will be delighted to see the Welsh youngster fulfilling his potential.
Despite all the more fancy names such as Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla in the squad, Arsenal wouldn't be where they are in the league without Ramsey. He has been brilliant at both ends of the pitch, providing penetrative play, scoring goals and protecting his back four.
Central Midfield: Fabian Delph
8 of 11Fabian Delph has been a force in midfield for Aston Villa this season. Despite the fact that he has been on the losing end three times this season, Delph has performed at a high level.
Statistics from WhoScored show the Villa youngster has made an immense contribution defensively, amassing 5 tackles and 3.8 interceptions per game. His ability to dribble and carry the ball forward from midfield helps Villa greatly on the counter-attack.
Left Midfield: Nathan Redmond
9 of 11Like some other new Premier League talents, Nathan Redmond is making a big impression early on.
The Norwich City midfielder has been a source of creativity for the Canaries, scoring a great match-winning goal against Southampton and generally being a thorn in the opposition's side. He will face tougher tests as the season progresses, but he has been one of the best performers early on this season.
Forward: Daniel Sturridge
10 of 11Three game-winning goals sets Daniel Sturridge apart from his fellow goal-scorers so far this season. The Liverpool forward has scored four very different goals to showcase why he's long been considered a player with plenty of talent.
He showcased his poacher's instinct recently against Swansea, while providing some delightful footwork for his goal against Aston Villa.
Forward: Olivier Giroud
11 of 11Here's another man that Arsenal fans will be delighted to see performing so well. Olivier Giroud has carried his fine preseason form into the Premier League, scoring four times and grabbing an assist.
He's shown plenty of confidence so far, battling it out with defenders in the air and on the ground, while linking up well with his teammates. His match-winner against Tottenham and slide-rule assist to Aaron Ramsey against Sunderland stand out.
