Week 2 Waiver Wire: Terrelle Pryor, Leonard Hankerson and Top Pickups

Matt FitzgeraldJun 8, 2018

The Week 2 waiver wire for fantasy football isn't likely filled with a ton of big names, but there are players at every position that every owner will be rushing to pick up.

As could be expected, the NFL kicked off with a slew of interesting, fresh developments, with some new key contributors emerging who put up respectable numbers worthy of fantasy consideration.

The headliners were Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who racked up 329 total yards and 112 on the ground, along with Washington Redskins receiver Leonard Hankerson, who had his second-career two-touchdown game on Monday night.

Here is a closer look at Pryor, Hankerson and one player from each other offensive position who should have promising fantasy prospects moving forward.

Terrelle Pryor, QB, Oakland Raiders

How's this for quite a surprise?

Many analysts said Pryor was inaccurate, but as Gil Brandt of NFL.com reports, he spent time in the offseason with Tom House to improve his mechanics and saw increased accuracy in practice:

That translated to the gridiron in his first start of 2013 for much of the game, as he completed 19 of 29 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, he threw two interceptions, one of which came on a possible game-winning drive, in a 21-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Considering the dearth of talent in his receiving corps, though, it wasn't a terrible start to the year. The Colts are widely viewed as a playoff team coming off last year's surprise 11-5 campaign, and expectations for the Raiders aren't exactly through the roof.

Pryor still nearly managed to steal one for Oakland on the road, falling just short. Until Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy's career night on Monday, his 112 rushing yards led the NFL, too.

The fantasy upside here is tremendous given Pryor's running ability. His arm strength and progress in delivering the football on target make him a legitimate dual-threat moving forward.

For owners in a less-than-ideal fantasy quarterback situation, you could do worse than Pryor. His Week 2 opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars, can't feel great about their situation under center.

Thus, Pryor should be able to run a lot of plays, as even the Raiders' new-look defense with a bunch of new pieces will keep the Jags' inept offense under wraps.

Stevan Ridley, RB, New England Patriots

Head coach Bill Belichick yanked Ridley after he lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by the Buffalo Bills. Ball security usually isn't a problem for Ridleyโ€”he had two fumbles in last year's regular seasonโ€”but Belichick's tolerance for such issues is clearly low.

However, wrist surgery will keep Shane Vereen out for the next few weeks or so, according to Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer:

Now it will be up to Ridley to shoulder the load for the Pats' running game, and he's the only truly established player on this waiver-wire list.

Ridley ran for over 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns just a season ago as the featured back, but he doesn't possess the receiving skills to be a true threat in that regard. The good news is he has a demonstrated knack for finding the end zone.

There aren't a lot of other attractive-looking options likely floating around on the waiver wire at running back to take a flier on as of now.

It's already the most volatile spot in the game, and even Ridley's role within the Patriots offense is admittedly murky in the future when Vereen makes his return. He is still the best option.

Leonard Hankerson, WR, Washington Redskins

It's usually not wise to have a knee-jerk reaction to a career Week 1 performance, but in Hankerson's case, picking him up and making him an instant start might not be a bad idea.

Four of Hankerson's five catches on Monday evening went for first downs against the Philadelphia Eagles, and two of those went for touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a 33-27 loss.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III said after the game that he wouldn't use rustiness as an excuse, but it certainly seemed like he wasn't himself in the first half. Those two scoring strikes to Hankerson got him on track, establishing a rapport between the two not seen very frequently before.

Hankerson had only three receiving touchdowns all of last year. Since he's already nearly doubled that, his role appears to be exponentially increasing.

The 2011 third-round pick wasn't a starter until Week 9 of his rookie year, and heย went out for the season after only four games of action.

Frequently discussed is the big jump from Year 1 to Year 2 in the NFL. In Hankerson's case, it may be coming a year late due to the rocky start in Washington.

Given Hankerson's 6'2", 211-pound frame and his speed, combined with Griffin's usual precision on deep passes, it's worth grabbing Hankerson on the waiver wire for sure.

Charles Clay, FB/TE, Miami Dolphins

All the rave at the tight end position is over the Denver Broncos' Julius Thomas, who had a breakout performance with two touchdowns Thursday.

However, with all the weapons Broncos QB Peyton Manning has in his arsenal, projecting fantasy numbers week to week for his talented skill players will be nightmarish.

The seemingly safer bet is Clay, who caught five of six passes thrown his way for 54 yards on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

Miami doesn't have another reliable tight end since Dustin Keller suffered a season-ending injury, so the fact that Clay played so well in the opener bodes well for quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Star receiver Mike Wallace is expected to do more than his one catch for 15 yards, but Brian Hartline isn't likely to put up nine catches for 114 yards on a consistent basis, either.

Clay can also line up as a fullback and catch the ball out of the flat, making him more of an H-back. Therefore, Tannehill can get it to him in a variety of ways, making his fantasy stock formidable despite a prior lack of proven, sustained production.
