College Football Rankings 2013 Week 3: Predicting Biggest Movers in Next Poll

Chris RolingSep 8, 2013

Another week in the books brings another set of wild fluctuations in the world of college football rankings.

Much like the weeks before it, Week 3 will see plenty of deserving teams miss out on the Top 25, but one squad in particular is about to take the rankings by storm after notching a major upset over a rival.

Unfortunately, also like the weeks before it, much of the Top 25 spent the weekend beating up on inferior talent. That all comes to a halt next week when teams like Alabama and Texas A&M face off.

Here are the projected rankings and biggest movers heading into Week 3.

South Carolina

Jadeveon Clowney may have notched his first sack of the season on what many think could be a Heisman campaign, but South Carolina could not stop Todd Gurley and the rushing attack of the Georgia Bulldogs in their SEC showdown.

Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray tossed two touchdowns while Heisman candidate Gurley added 134 yards and a touchdown, as Georgia cruised to a 41-30 victory.

Outside of a porous defense that had little issue with North Carolina the week prior, South Carolina saw a good effort from quarterback Connor Shaw go to waste, as his 228 yards and two touchdowns meant little.

The Gamecocks entered the contest at No. 6, but losing to the No. 11 squad means a significant dip is on the way.

All hope is not lost for the Gamecocks' season, but their overall ranking in the polls going into Week 3 is going to be a disappointment.

Miami (FL)

The Miami Hurricanes entered the week having a hard time proving they belonged in the Top 25.

That won't be the case in Week 3.

Miami welcomed in-state rival Florida to town for the first meeting between the two teams since 2008. No. 12 Florida was considered the favorite courtesy of the rankings, but Miami defeated the Gators 21-16.

Though Florida will take a serious dip in the rankings, Miami is the real story here after receiving qualifying votes a week ago following a win over Florida Atlantic only to ultimately be denied.

Now there's no excuse to not have Miami in the Top 25, especially as a team that touts an elite defense that forced five turnovers against a borderline Top 10 team.

Offensively, the Hurricanes do just enough behind the arm of quarterback Stephen Morris to win games, but it is the defense that will enable Miami to make a serious run.

As ESPN points out, there's plenty of historical significance to this win:

Baylor

Time to give Bears their due.

A week removed from the highest-scoring total in school history since 1929 with 69 points against Wofford, Baylor snuck into the rankings and exceeded that total with a 70-point output against Buffalo in Week 2.

The star of the show? Running back Lache Seastrunk, who rushed only 17 times for 150 yards and three touchdowns—before halftime.

In other words, Baylor was not even at full strength for an entire game and dropped 70 points on the opposition.

Granted, it was against Buffalo from the MAC, but a team that can drop 69 and 70 points in back-to-back weeks is going to climb up the charts in a hurry.

A No. 23 ranking simply does not do a team this offensively loaded justice, and that will be more than apparent when the Week 3 rankings are announced.
